Melissa Benoist has made quite a mark since donning a cape to play the DC superhero Supergirl on the CW series of the same name. The 30-year-old actress has portrayed Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El (aka Kara Danvers) since 2015. But the comic book show isn’t the actress’s only notable role. Find out what other movies and TV programs Benoist has appeared in.
Supergirl takes place in the same universe as The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Benoist has appeared in multiple crossover episodes on both of those shows. Those include “Invasion!”, three connected episodes of The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow that aired in 2016, as well as “Crisis on Earth-X,” a 2017 four-episode special event that included all the shows, and “Elseworlds,” the 2018 crossover between Supergirl, The Flash, and Arrow.
Playing a cult leader’s wife
More recently, Benoist took on a very different role from her Supergirl character. In 2018, she played Rachel Koresh, the wife of Branch-Davidian leader David Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) on the Paramount Network miniseries Waco. In an interview with Collider, she said that the differences between Supergirl and Koresh were what drew her to the role.
“[E]very actor wants to play as many roles on the Richter scale as they can, and Rachel Koresh certainly is very different from Supergirl, but she shares a lot of the strength that Supergirl has,” she said.
Filming Waco was an intense experience, Benoist added. “Spending three months with these people, the end was truly difficult and is something that I’ll carry with me, forever. It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever shake,” she said. Transitioning back into playing a comic book hero was a challenge, at least at first. “It was quite a jarring turn … I was in such a different headspace.”
Glee and other TV and film appearances
Before Supergirl, Benoist was best-known for playing Marley Rose for two seasons on the series Glee. Previously, she had roles on shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, and Homeland.
Benoist’s first film role was in Tennessee, a 2008 movie starring Mariah Carey. In 2014, she played Miles Teller’s love interest in the Oscar-nominated Whiplash, and in 2015 she was in Danny Collins, which starred Al Pacino and Annette Benning. Her other movies include The Longest Rise, Lowriders, Patriots Day, Billy Boy, and Sun Dogs.
Engagement to her Supergirl co-star
In 2019, Benoist got engaged to her Supergirl co-star Chris Wood. The two started dating soon after Wood joined the show in 2016, where he played her on-screen love interest Mon-El. Benoist was previously married to her Glee co-star Blake Jenner. Their divorce was finalized in 2017.
Supergirl airs Sundays at 8/7c on the CW.
