EE has been busy with OnePlus it appears and the mobile operator will be the first in the world to sell the new OnePlus 5G handset when it launches in 2019.
The partnership between the two firms should, if all goes to plan, produce the best 5G connected experience for customers in the UK.
The two firms are working closely together with an R&D partnership to ensure that both the consumer hardware in OnePlus phones and the EE network work well together.
OnePlus has been working on 5G for some time it claims. In a statement Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus said "Our users are always eager to try new things and they are now ready to experience the next generation of connectivity and speed. In response, OnePlus has poured efforts into 5G research since 2016. Today, we stand poised to embrace the dawn of 5G"
Rumours suggest that the OnePlus 5G will add around $100 to the price of the OnePlus 6T, which currently retails for around $549.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s Consumer division, said: “EE and OnePlus have a shared vision: to give our customers the best connected experience possible. We’re working together on cutting edge technology to deliver that, and we’re leading the world on the journey to 5G.
Although EE hasn’t confirmed other devices it’s likely that some version of the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be sold on the new 5G network, along with a Huawei model. That could mean three exciting handsets next year.
EE will launch 5G in 16 cities at key locations that have large numbers of users on the 4G network. London, Carfidd, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester will be the first places to see 5G.
The coverage won’t be universal though as it will take EE a while to build the network. However 5G upgrades also mean faster 4G, so users in those areas may see some benefits even if they aren’t on the new system.
