Look, we love Doctor Who, loads, but it’s hard not to laugh at some of the pointed observations made about the long-running BBC sci-fi series by Honest Trailers.
Screen Junkies have released two new videos – one for the classic series, and one for post-2005 Who – and mercilessly parody its many absurd tropes.
Describing the original 1963-1989 run as “a show that’s both timeless and completely out of date”, the first trailer tackles everything from racism, to missing episodes, to angry fan debates.
The second explains how the series was revived after 16 years, “because all the British nerds who grew up with classic Who finally got old enough to call the shots at the BBC”.
Try not to laugh at the cruel barbs that follow, from the spot-on descriptions of modern Who‘s companions (“usually a cute girl… who after a few seasons of adventure, usually has her life ruined… if she’s lucky”) to the description of David Tennant as “the unquestioned master of staring sadly into the middle distance”.
Oh, and as for referring to Clara as “Just Kinda There-a”? We’re saying nothing.
Doctor Who returned to BBC One for its latest series last Sunday, with Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Time Lord pulling in an epic 8.2 million viewers.
Not bad for a TV show “where anything can happen, and none of the continuity matters”.
The series continues this Sunday (October 14) at 6.55pm on BBC One.
