EastEnders‘ Jake Wood has spoken out about Dame Barbara Windsor’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
During an appearance on today’s Good Morning Britain (May 16), the Max Branning actor praised Dame Barbara and her husband Scott Mitchell for revealing her diagnosis.
The Peggy Mitchell star’s diagnosis was confirmed by her husband earlier this week – and messages of support and love have been flooding in for the soap icon ever since.
Wood told Good Morning Britain: “I fully support their decision and totally understand it.
“I know they had the diagnosis in 2014 and they’ve worked incredibly hard together to keep it as quiet and as private as they can – I suppose you’re never sure how far it’s going to develop and how quickly.”
Asked by Susanna Reid how Dame Barbara is doing, Wood replied: “Ups and downs, good days and bad days.
“I’ve been in touch with Scott this week, but it is incredible. They are just an incredible couple anyway, and Scott’s got a lot of support around him.”
He added: “I wish them both really well, and someone told me the donations to the Alzheimer’s Society have rocketed as a result. I think it’s amazing.”
A number of Babs’ co-stars including Pam St Clement, Shane Richie and Ross Kemp have shared their love for the actress and her husband, who are apparently “thrilled to bits” with the public’s response to the news.
