Orange Is the New Black is ending with its upcoming seventh season, but turns out that may not be the last we see of the ladies of Litchfield.
The Netflix dramedy’s producers are already “in discussions” with creator Jenji Kohan about a possible sequel series.
Speaking to reporters during an earnings call on Thursday (November 8), Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs said (via The Hollywood Reporter): “We’re really proud of the long run that Orange Is the New Black had.
“It remains one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. We’re ending on a high note. Keep in mind we own that series and will be distributing it for years to come.
“We’re already in discussions and, when the timing is right, we’ll talk further with Jenji about a potential sequel.”
Still, it may be a while before this sequel arrives on screens, with THR adding that there’s nothing immediately in the works.
The most recent sixth season ended with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger involving Taylor Schilling’s Piper Kerman that Alex Vause actress Laura Prepon said in August could foreshadow the show’s end.
“The endgame is there,” she said. “As of now, season seven is our last season. So, the endgame is clear.”
Along with that hint of an “endgame”, executive producer Tara Herrmann has also recently confirmed that a major character will definitely be returning after an ambiguous fate in the sixth season.
Orange is the New Black‘s seventh and final season will be premiering worldwide on Netflix in 2019.
