The Big Bang Theory is ending, but as the old adage goes, every cloud has a silver lining. This cloud’s silver lining? The long-awaited return of a fan-favourite character.
In news that will surely help to heal fans’ heartbreak, TVLine is reporting that Bob Newhart’s beloved Professor Proton will be catching up with Sheldon Cooper one last time.
A representative for the sitcom reportedly confirmed the news, but details on when the character will return – and how, given that the professor has died – are being kept under wraps.
Newhart’s character Arthur Jeffries (better known as Professor Proton) first appeared in season six, much to Sheldon and Leonard’s delight, popping up intermittently before his death in season seven.
Professor Proton’s upcoming visit will be Newhart’s sixth appearance on the series, and whether he returns as a ghostly apparition or in a flashback, we can at least count on Sheldon receiving some sage counsel from beyond the grave.
And here’s us thinking Sheldon was a man of science.
Bob Newhart isn’t the only guest star to return for Big Bang‘s final season – Keith Carradine will also be reprising his role as Penny’s dad Wyatt.
“Wyatt is back, for a moment, anyway,” Keith confirmed recently, before admitting that the current vibe on set during the final season’s filming is “interesting” but “delightful”.
