The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh was back this evening to welcome a host of new contestants onto the ITV quiz show.
Leon, 32, Billy, 20, Nikki, 45, and Julie, 53, made up today’s team and Mark Labbett, also know as the Beast, was the chosen Chaser the four hopeful quizzers had to face.
Leon got the team off to a disappointing start when he was beaten by Mark after winning £3,000 in the cash builder round.
However, one question during his round led to an awkward comment from Mark about his wife which viewers were quick to pick up on.
Bradley asked the pair: “Percale is a variety of what fabric?” and read out the possible answers as “Leather,” “Cotton,” and “Linen.”
Leon decided on “Leather” and reasoned: “The name sounds a little too fancy to be leather,” but Bradley shook his head and revealed the correct answer to be “Cotton.”
Mark, who answered correctly, then remarked: “My lovely wife bought me as a birthday present a book of fashion terms, thank you darling.”
Mark and his wife Katie Labbett were reported to have spilt after the 26-year-old spoke to The Sun on Sunday explaining that she was now dating another man.
In the interview, she said: “Mark and I had been talking about separating for some time – we have been drifting for a while. He works away a lot and that’s been hard. A lot of people think it’s the age difference but we don’t see that as a factor.”
She denied having an affair and explained that she told her husband about the new man, Scott after their first encounter.
Bradley was left speechless by the admission on the ITV quiz show, which was clearly filmed before the spilt, and viewers watching were quick to comment.
One viewer remarked: “Oh that’s a little awkward #TheChase.”
Another said: “Thought Mark’s wife was now his ex – how old is this show? #thechase.”
“Great timing to show this episode. Lovely wife. #TheChase,” wrote a third.
A fourth added: “Bit awkward the Beast mentioning his wife when they’ve just split because she cheated on him #TheChase.”
“Mentioned his wife but no longer together. #thechase,” commented a fifth with a number of embarrassed emojis.
As the show continued, Billy and Nikki brought back £4,000 each to the table after beating the Chaser in their respective head-to-head rounds.
The final contestant, Julie, went on to beat the Chaser and add £7,000 to the prize fund, bringing the total jackpot to £15,000.
Billy, Nikki, and Julie scored an impressive 19 in the final chase which, along with four correctly answered push-backs, led them to beat Mark and walk away with their winnings.
Congratulating the team, Mark cheekily remarked: “You beat me on modern pop culture and health food, well played,” causing Bradley to burst out laughing.
The Chase airs weekdays on ITV at 5pm.
