The Virtues is Channel 4’s new drama starring Line of Duty’s Stephen Graham, which starts tonight (Wednesday, May 15) at 9pm. Stephen Graham stars alongside Helen Behan and Niamh Algar in the cast ofThe Virtues, directed by This is England creator Shane Meadows. The Virtues cast also includes Frank Lavert and Mark O’Halloran.
Who is in the cast of The Virtues on Channel 4?
Joseph – Stephen Graham
Joseph is the lead in The Virtues, a recovering alcoholic tempted to go off the wagon when his family decides to move to Australia.
Stephen Graham, who plays Joseph, told Channel 4: “Does he press the ‘f*** it all’ button and throw his sobriety away or does he try and do the best he can?
“He needs to piece it all together, so he goes on this journey back to Ireland, to answer some of the questions from his past.”
As well as featuring prominently in this year’s series of Line of Duty, Graham has starred in This is England, Save Me, Boardwalk Empire and Taboo.
Anna – Helen Behan
Anna is the sister of Joseph, who has been estranged to him for decades.
Anna actress Helen Behan said of her character: “She’s got a good heart, she’s got great resolve.”
As well as starring previous Shane Meadows TV series This is England ‘88 and ‘90, Behan is a registered nurse.
Dinah – Niamh Algar
Dinah is Anna’s damaged sister-in-law, who becomes a shoulder to cry on for Joseph.
Niamh Algar, who stars as Dinah, said: “She arrives in the story in true “Shane Meadows-style” – with a bang, literally, after punching her boyfriend out on the front porch of Anna’s home, which is a fairly common occurrence for her.”
The actress will be familiar to The Virtues viewers from The Bisexual, Pure and recent BBC Two drama MotherFatherSon.
Michael – Frank Laverty
Michael is Anna’s husband, who offers Joseph a lifeline by offering him a job is his building company.
The character is portrayed by Frank Laverty, who has previously appeared in On Home Ground, Michael Collins and Angela’s Ashes.
Craigy – Mark O’Halloran
Craigy is a co-worker of Joseph who may have something to do with his troubled past.
Mark O’Halloran portrays Craigy and has also starred in Devils, Calvary and Adam & Paul.
The Virtues cast also includes Ballykissangel’s Deirdre Donnelly as Susan, Mount Pleasant’s James Nelson-Joyce as Ryan and Peter Rabbit’s Vauxhall Jermaine as David.
The Virtues is co-written by Shane Meadows, the writer and director behind This is England and Dead Man’s Shoes, and Jack Thorne, part of the creative team behind Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
