The Walking Dead season 9 will explain Maggie's absence in future episodes

Note: This article contains spoilers about The Walking Dead season 9 episode 6 ‘Who Are You Now?’.

The Walking Dead said goodbye to Rick Grimes last week. But episode 5 was also Maggie Rhee’s last episode (for now).

Maggie’s arc for the season concluded when she decided to spare Negan and now, after the huge time jump, she is nowhere to be seen.

Episode 6, titled ‘Who Are You Now?’, makes references to relations between the communities being tense and fractured – particularly Hilltop (at one point, Ezekiel calls Hilltop “more distant than it’s ever been”).

It is unclear what happened during the time jump, but Maggie is no longer around. And although the specifics weren’t addressed in episode 6, showrunner Angela Kang confirms that future episodes will explore what happened.

“There’s definitely a story point to the fact that Maggie is gone,” Kang told IGN.

“We know what the backstory is, and there’s pieces of it that are dribbled out.

“We have a very clear idea of what she’s off doing and what’s going on, but that’s part of the backstory of the story we’ll be telling going forward.”

Kang also confirmed that Lauren Cohan will not be back this season, due to her commitments to new ABC show Whiskey Cavalier.

“This was her last screen appearance for this season, but we very much have more stories we want to tell for Maggie,” she said.

“There’s some stuff that we’re trying to hopefully make work out, so at this point, it’s for the lawyers to schedule things. But she’s wonderful and we’re very, very hopeful we’ll be able to have more story for her soon.”

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX in the UK. You can also catch up on the show via NOW TV.
