Burford has appeared in many popular TV series before landing her leading role in Press. Here’s where you might have spotted her before.
Who is Priyanga Burford?
Burford graduated from Lamda – the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art – in 2000.
Both an actress and a writer, Burford has appeared in hit shows including The Thick Of It, Silent Witness and Casualty.
She played the role of Baroness Sureka in The Thick Of It and featured heavily in one memorable episode where a public inquiry was being carried out and the shows key characters – including the foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker – were called to give evidence.
The actress also made a couple of appearances in another much-loved BBC sitcom, W1A and even had a small role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Her performance in Ukip: The First 100 Days, a Channel 4 mockumentary, helped bring her to prominence as she played the fictitious character Deepa Kaur who had become the first Asian woman elected to represent the anti-EU party as an MP.
In 2017 she starred in King Charles III a BBC adaption of a play by Mike Bartlett, the same man who created Doctor Foster and Press.
What is Press about?
Press focuses on two rival newspapers in Britain, the left-leaning broadsheet The Herald and the tabloid paper The Post.
The series will look at the job of journalists and editors and the unique pressures of the 24-hour news environment.
Speaking about his new series to The Times, Bartlett said: “I’m fearful for the world at the moment, which just makes me even more sure we need really good journalism, as much as possible to as many people as possible.
“And if I were to write a show about any profession I would find there is good and bad. Journalism and the newspaper industry isn’t any different.”
The first episode of the show is titled Death Knock and sees the Herald’s deputy news editor (played by Charlotte Riley) working on the story of a young woman killed following a hit-and-run by a police car.
