Would Princess Diana Have Been Able to Become Queen?

When it comes to favorite royals, there’s no doubt that Princess Diana is high on everyone’s list. From her willingness to get to know commoners to her commitment to charities to her love for her two sons, we all wish she was still around today to meet her beloved grandchildren. And if Diana was still here, there’s another question that’s often tossed around: Would she have upgraded royal status? And is there any way she could have one day become queen after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing?

Here’s what Diana’s royal title could have possibly changed to in the event she was still with us.

If Prince Charles became king during their marriage, what would Diana’s title be?

Prince Charles and Princess Diana had a troubled marriage from the start. The List recalls when Prince Charles forgot to kiss Diana on their wedding day — and Diana also commented that their intimacy totally “fizzled out” by the time Harry was born. And, as we all know, they did end up divorcing a year prior to Diana’s untimely death. But if they had stayed married and Diana was never in that car accident, what would her title be today?

According to the line of succession, Prince Charles is the next in line to the throne when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, passes. This would make him king — and that would have made Diana queen consort. The current rule states that the wives of kings do not receive the title of queen and instead are known by this title, though there’s no doubt that the People’s Princess may have been known as Queen Diana to the public.

If Charles had become King, Diana became queen consort, and then Charles passed away, would she then become fully known as the queen? Unfortunately, that’s not how the line of succession works. The title of king would then just be passed to Charles’ eldest son, Prince William.

Diana loved the public — and when it came to royal titles, she seemingly couldn’t have cared less about them. PopSugar reports during a BBC interview in 1995, she told interviewer Martin Bashir, “I’d like to be a queen of people’s hearts, but I don’t see myself being queen of this country.”

She also added that the very establishment of the government probably wouldn’t want her to be the queen, either, as she always went her own way (and certainly broke some rules, too). “They’ve decided that I’m a nonstarter, because I do things different, because I don’t go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart and not the head,” she said in the interview. “And albeit that’s gotten me into trouble in my work, but someone’s gotta go out there and love people.”

As for the public, we’re sure they would have loved to see her as the queen. Thanks to her ability to connect with just about anyone and her candidness regarding her own mental health and marriage struggles, she would have been welcomed by all as the queen.

Could Camilla Parker Bowles ever become queen?

Out of respect for Diana, it was agreed upon years ago that if Charles accedes to the throne, his current wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, would gain the title of princess consort instead of queen consort out of respect for Diana, express.co.uk reports. The publication also notes, however, that Prince Charles does have the opportunity to change his mind and possibly make her queen consort — though one of Charles’ close friends allegedly said he would need his sons to back him on that decision in order for it to actually occur.

Would Prince William and Harry allow for Camilla to be known as queen consort? Many don’t believe so. And the public seemingly isn’t thrilled about the idea of Camilla gaining such a superior title, either, as polls have shown the British still don’t favor her over Princess Diana.
