It’s been less than a month since Euphoria premiered on HBO, and it has already been renewed for a second season. The groundbreaking series, led by Zendaya, is receiving critical acclaim for its rawness and realness. The series is unlike anything else on television and it appeals to the youngest audience in recent HBO history. Averaging about 5.5 million viewers per episode, it’s no wonder that HBO immediately thought to bring it back for a second season. The cast of the drama is obviously thrilled to reprise their roles on the hit show. Zendaya, in particular, had a very sweet reaction to the Euphoria Season 2 announcement.
Euphoria Season 2
Yesterday, Euphoria Season 2 got the official green light. In an official statement, HBO’s Vice President of programming, Francesca Orsi, gushed about the show and its important place in media before announcing a second season. “Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has built an incredible world with an extraordinary cast led by the supremely talented Zendaya. We are so grateful that he chose HBO as the home for this groundbreaking series. We look forward to following these complex characters as their journeys continue through the challenging world they inhabit” Orsi declared.
Naturally, fans of the show were overjoyed that they’d get to see more of this truly complex and gut-wrenching world. But, nobody was more pleased about Euphoria season 2 than Zendaya, who has truly embraced her first adult role with her beautiful portrayal of Rue. Zendaya took to her Twitter page to express a sweet message of excitement and gratitude following the announcement. “Literally just got the call. Can’t say thank you enough for the support we’ve seen, wow…” the 22-year-old tweeted reverently.
From Disney to darkness
Though it’s clear now that Zendaya was more than up for the challenge of playing such a dark role, many people were skeptical when she was announced as the lead of the show. Having played primarily juvenile roles, in the past, fans questioned if she’d be able to pull off the deeply disturbing role of a drug addict.
For her part, Zendaya seemed extraordinarily self-aware of how others might perceive her before they began watching the show. “It’s like going from nothing to everything — there were no steps in between. That’s why people think it’s such a stretch for me to play this character. There’s a lot of people who probably think I can’t do it because they don’t truly understand my personality. And I get it: I’m a Disney kid. There’s a lot to prove” the 22-year-old confessed in a recent interview with the New York Times.
Zendaya has more than proved her place in adult drama. Because she is at the center of the show, much of Euphoria’s success is contingent on her performance. She has given the show a tremendous amount of nuance because of her incredible talent, and reviews of her performance have been overwhelmingly positive. The character of Rue is equal parts disturbing and compelling, and definitely is one to watch when trying to understand a facet of adolescence. Euphoria truly brings light to some of the important issues that today’s youth are experiencing and the series is just warming up. We can’t wait to see what Euphoria Season 2 has in store for us.
