Post office manager Peter Day, 60, was struck by the HGV on Wednesday afternoon while out running on an A road in Baldock, Hertfordshire.
Passing motorists called the emergency services and although paramedics treated him he was declared dead at the scene.
He had been the manager of a post office in Hitchin for about five years.
His wife Cilla said: “We were a very close family.
“Peter loved to be at home with us, he was very family-orientated and very traditional. He was a quiet and gentle person.”
Daughter Laura, 27, added: “We really enjoyed our family holidays together.
"Last year we went to Mexico to celebrate Dad’s 60th, which was great fun, and in March this year, we went to Florida.
“We were booked to go to Turkey in September this year, which he was really looking forward to.”
Peter, originally from south London, would go running four or five times a week around the footpaths and countryside surrounding Baldock.
Cilla and Peter were married in March 1990.
Hertfordshire Police has appealed for witnesses who might have information to come forward.
In a statement they were keen to speak to another man who may have been running in the area at the same time.
