HIV vaccine to be tested in Europe and US in bombshell AIDS breakthrough

The bombshell study will involve 3,800 men who have sex with men who will receive a regimen of jabs, Bloomberg reports.

There is high hopes for the therapy.

Reportedly, it has provided protection against HIV in two thirds of animals and was tested safe in humans.

Bruce Walker, director of the Ragon Institute, told Bloomberg: “It’s measurably better in animal studies than other vaccines tested thus far.

“The real questions are, will it be protective, what percentage of people will be protected, and what will be the durability of the protection?”

In the clinical trial, participants will get six injections in four sessions.

Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said: “Conceptually it’s an interesting idea.

“There’s always excitement, but it should be saved for the results.”

HIV is estimated to have caused around 35 million deaths worldwide since it was first identified in the early 1980s.

One of the problems with HIV is that it takes control of the body’s own immune cells.

It can turn our white blood cells into factories that assemble more HIV.

Although current medicines, known as antiretrovirals, can stop the endless replication that leads to the immunodeficiency known as AIDS, they cannot remove HIV from inside our cells – so infected patients need to take the drugs for life.

Another study has proposed using gene-editing to slice rogue HIV genetic material from inside human DNA.

Meanwhile, another new HIV drug is reported to eliminate up to 99% of the virus within four weeks of treatment.
