The 44-year-old woman was found in a “dishevelled state” in a park in the centre of Milan at about 6am on Sunday. Before the attack the woman had been out drinking with another English woman along the Naviglio Grande canal before they parted ways. She then walked alone a street called Via Conca Naviglio and at some point lost her mobile phone.
The woman told police how she was attacked and dragged in to a bush in a nearby park, according to Italian magazine Corriere.
The woman was found by a resident walking their dog at about 6am. The resident alerted police.
When police arrived she told them about five or sex men, she described as north African, stole her bag at 3.30am.
She told police one of the men raped her.
A Milan police spokesman said: “We were called by a passerby who had seen the woman in a dishevelled state partially clothed in the early hours of the morning.
“Initially it was thought she had been the victim of a mugging as she told officers her telephone had been stolen but she then told us she had been raped.
“DNA samples have been taken and are being investigated.
“She was due to return to Britain the same day of the attack but her departure has been delayed.”
Police have said they are checking CCTV footage of the area and said they want to speak to a gang of North African youths seen in the area before the woman was found.
