Prince’s white Cloud guitar among hundreds of items set for auction

Purple reign: Guitar designed and played by Prince worth at least $15,000 among hundreds items of musical memorabilia set go go up for auction in NYC

  • A number of outfits he wore at different performances are also being sold off
  • Various pairs of Prince’s high-heel boots are included, along with jewelry, clothing designed by Versace and Prada
  • Awards, posters, tour schedules, backstage passes and set lists are also for sale
  • The musical legend died in April 2016, aged 57

Music fans looking for a piece of history are going to get a chance to own guitars, outfits and other memorabilia from the likes of Prince, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and others.

Julien’s Auctions is hosting two days of auctions focused on musical artists at the Hard Rock Cafe New York and online.

A public preview of the items opened on Monday. The auction days are Friday and Saturday.

The first auction day is dedicated to Prince, the musical legend who died in April 2016. 

The items include a guitar the artist had commissioned, as well as a number of outfits he wore at different performances, and handwritten lyrics.

The second day’s items include guitars played by Dylan and Harrison, as well as costumes and jewelry.

Ruffled, sparkly rock star outfits worn by Prince and one of his famous white ‘Cloud’ guitars are among memorabilia of the late superstar are being auctioned on the frist day of  a two-day ‘music icons’ sale.

The Prince items are being sold by family members and former employees, a Julien’s spokeswoman said.

The Schecter electric guitar was commissioned by Prince in 2002 and designed in the style of the one used in the 1984 film ‘Purple Rain.’ 

It was designed by Dave Rusan and gifted to a Paisley Park employee and has a pre-sale price tag of $10,000 to $20,000.

A custom electric blue two-piece ensemble Prince wore onstage in a 1999 pay-per-view concert at Paisley Park with Lenny Kravitz will also be auctioned, with a pre-sale value set at $40,000 to $50,000. 

A purple glitter outfit he wore during tours in 1997 and 1998 before leaving it with his first wife, Mayte Garcia was estimated at $6,000 to $8,000.

A custom-made floor-length red tunic with high slits on each side with a pair of custom-made red satin booties are expected to for for between $10,000-$20,000. So too a black velvet sequined coat worn by Prince during his performance at Studio 54 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in 1999.

A gold and black print lace-up shirt with matching pants created for his 1997tour, together with a pair of black heeled boots with love symbol zips is also expected to fetch up to $20.000. 

Aa red jacquard tunic and pants ensemble with gold embroidery on the collar and cuffs could fetch $8,000.

A red long-sleeved ruffled shirt and pants ensemble with purple glitter, worn by Prince on his 1998 tour in Europe and on the cover of the promotional photo book and poster could go as high as $30,000.


Also up for grabs is a custom electric blue ensemble worn by the musician on stage in a 1999 performance at Paisley Park with Lenny Kravitz, with an estimated value of about $50,000

Various pairs of Prince’s signature high-heel booties are included, along with jewelry, clothing designed by Versace and Prada, record awards, posters, tour schedules, backstage passes and set lists. 

There are even some handwritten lyrics being sold off.

Last November, a bidding war resulted in a $700,000 sale of a Prince guitar, the highest price ever paid for one of the late icon’s guitars, according to Julien’s. 

The teal blue Cloud guitar had a pre-sale value set at $60,000 to $80,000.
