Samuel Akpobome, 18 said he throttled mum Christiana after drugging her with a potion concocted by a witch doctor.
He was among two murder suspects and more than 80 other prisoners paraded by the Edo State Police Command.
The water factory worker said the witch doctor promised him wealth if he killed and then slept with her corpse 20 miles away in Ologbo in a so-called “money ritual”.
These rituals have many forms but some involve killing a loved one in the belief that spirits will grant them riches if they are prepared to make money at any cost.
He claimed the witch doctor named One Love “told me to use my mother for a money ritual” and promised him 50,000 Nigerian naira – about £105 – “if I killed my mother and slept with her”.
“The native doctor told me to kill my mother and sleep with her,” he said.
“I strangled her when she was sleeping and then slept with her. The doctor told me to do so and keep her corpse for two days.
“He said I should cut my mother’s ear and fingers and bring them to him. I wanted to cut the ears and fingers before the people came in.
“My mother did not offend me. I killed her because of the money.”
But the sickening money-making plan backfired when Akpobome’s grandmother reportedly caught him having sex with the lifeless body.
“I slept with my mother only once. I pressed my mother’s neck to kill her while she was sleeping,” he said.
“The doctor did not tell me the number of days to sleep with her. But I was caught when I could no longer keep it.
“I could not find a place to keep it. I did not know that my grandmother was sitting outside.
“She opened the door and saw me in the corpse inside the room and raised the alarm that drew the attention of neighbours.”
Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo said Akpobome would be in court soon on unspecified charges.
