Aaron Carter’s fiancée Melanie Martin is speaking out in the days following his tragic death.
The world continues to come to grips with the shocking news of the former child star’s passing, with tributes from Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, The Game, his twin sister, and more pouring in, remembering the 34-year-old as a kind soul. As we reported earlier, the singer was found dead at his home in Lancaster, California Saturday after police were dispatched to his residence following an 11 a.m. report of a male drowning in a bathtub. Law enforcement representatives told TMZ homicide detectives are investigating the case, which they call standard procedure.
While his official cause of death has yet to be announced, prescription pills and cans of compressed air were found at the scene, which investigators believe he may have been huffing at the time of his death. Carter’s longtime friend Gary Madatyan confirmed to Entertainment Tonight on Monday that the star was indeed huffing, explaining:
“There was a time he was doing it on Instagram. As soon as I saw it, me and Melanie, we got in on a text message saying, ‘This is bad. This is not good.’ We were very worried about him… It was really bad… He looked terrible. He lost so much weight. He was not acting normal. His mind was not there… I heard he’s taking a lot of medication, not specifically illegal drugs, but he was on a lot of medication.”
A truly heartbreaking situation all around, with Melanie being left to struggle while facing her new reality. We covered how she released a statement to the Associated Press shortly after news of Aaron’s death broke, writing:
“We are still in the process of accepting this unfortunate reality. Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.”
She later uploaded a since-deleted TikTok of her sobbing in the car, followed by an Instagram Story pic of the two kissing, with the caption, “My baby I can’t breathe.” Now, the mother of his only child has more to say.
In a statement shared with People Monday, Melanie explained:
“My heart is completely broken over the passing of my fiancé Aaron. I knew he was struggling, and I tried everything to help him. He has a very independent and strong personality, and I couldn’t help him in the way I felt he needed it. I only wish I had more people to help me with him. I will now be raising our son as a single mother and this is the worst day of my life, but I have to be strong for our son. I’m devastated.”
Melanie shares 11-month-old Prince with the I Want Candy singer, and the two had a rocky relationship to say the least. It seems like she and Gary were some of Aaron’s main sources of support, but ultimately his own demons may have outweighed the positivity in his life.
So sad. Rest in peace. Our thoughts are with Melanie, Prince, and the rest of his family.
