Alex Jones in awkward retort as Frank Skinner corrects hosts on Camilla’s title

The One Show: Frank Skinner corrects presenters on Camilla’s title

The One Show presenters Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas fell into an awkward silence when comedian Frank Skinner, attempted to pull them up on a Royal “error”.

During a segment on the BBC’s 500 Words competition, which is the UK’s largest story writing competition for 5-11 year-olds, the hosts teased that finalists will get the chance to go to the palace and meet the Queen.

Jermaine encouraged younger viewers to enter the contest by saying: “If you’re ready to have a go then get typing, or tell your story to an adult, and let them type it for you.”

“Yes, and if you know a child or have a class who wants to enter, head to bbc.co.uk/500words where you can find everything you need to know,” Alex added.

The BBC presenter continued: “Some 50 finalists will go to the palace next year and might even meet Her Majesty the Queen.

“Now, the final will be featured on a special 500 Words programme with The One Show, we’re having a day out at the palace aren’t we? Can’t wait!”

However, Frank stopped Alex in her tracks by attempting to correct the hosts on their reference to Her Majesty the Queen, following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022.

The comedian interjected: “They won’t meet Her Majesty the Queen…”

Jermaine sheepishly replied: “Yeah, I think we got that bit slightly wrong, didn’t we? His Majesty is who they might mean.”

“Sorry, no, the Queen Consort,” the presenter then suddenly realised.

Following the confusion live on-air, Alex pointed out that Camilla is now in fact being referred to as the Queen.

Frank then awkwardly responded: “It’s not my business, just trying to be helpful…”

“We’re alright!” Alex promptly hit back, before Jermaine admitted Frank’s remark “threw me off as well”.

Frank then cheekily quipped: “I know you don’t get to keep up with the news on this show,” before the presenters swiftly moved on.

After the loss of his mother, King Charles’ wife Camilla was given a new title: Her Majesty the Queen Consort.

From Charles’s Coronation in May, his wife then became known as ‘Queen Camilla’ in an official capacity.

The awkward moment didn’t go unnoticed by The One Show’s viewers, with one writing on X (formerly known as Twitter): “Frank Skinner correcting #TheOneShow over the Queen consort [laughing face emojis].”

Another fan added: “Major faux pa’s on #theoneshow The Queen is sadly dead.”(sic)

“They meant Queen Camilla,” a third viewer then pointed out.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
