The actor portraying the King of Rock and Roll in Baz Luhrmann’s critically acclaimed biopic is trolled after channeling his character while doing red carpet interviews.
AceShowbiz –Austin Butler apparently still can’t stop talking like Elvis Presley. The “Elvis” star has been mocked by critics on social media for “still” speaking with his standard Elvis drawl at the 2023 Oscars.
The 31-year-old brought his Elvis accent while doing red carpet interviews at the 95th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, March 12 at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater. He told ABC that being at the Oscars as a nominee “feels like an impossible dream” and he has to “pinch himself.” He then added with his Elvis flare, “Every time I get up in front of people as myself I’m nervous.”
Fans, however, would have preferred Austin just be himself vocally, with many poking fun on Twitter. “Austin Butler still has a hint of that accent and I’m gonna shove him into a locker,” wrote one user. Another weighed in, “Sorry not sorry, but it’s so cringe to listen to Austin Butler speak with the Elvis accent.” One joked, “take a shot every time austin butler uses the elvis accent tonight.”
“when is Austin Butler losing the accent? Or is it part of his DNA now?” asked one viewer at home, while someone else wrote, “Austin Butler still has a hint of that accent and I’m gonna shove him into a locker.” A separate critic even urged Austin to “DROP THAT F**KING ACCENT!!!!!”
Austin’s up for Best Leading Actor category for his starring role as “Elvis” in Baz Luhrmann’s critically acclaimed biopic. He’s up against Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal.
Last month, the Disney Channel alum was trolled when he accepted an award at the Golden Globe Awards and spoke with a pronounced Southern drawl, despite hailing from Southern California.
“Oh man, all my words are leaving me. I just am so grateful right now. I’m in this room full of my heroes. [Brad Pitt], I love you. [Quentin Tarantino], I printed out the ‘Pulp Fiction’ script when I was 12. I cannot believe I’m here right now,” he said, invoking Elvis’ signature accent.
Perhaps Austin took the criticism to heart as shortly after his Golden Globe Awards appearance, he shared that he wanted to stop talking like the King of Rock and Roll. “I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing,” he shared on Britain’s “The Graham Norton Show“.
