BAFTAs suffer a La La Land moment as wrong winner is announced – and BBC doesnt air it

Carey Mulligan was incorrectly announced as the winner of the supporting actress award at the EE BAFTAs after a translation gaffe while deaf actor Troy Kotsur was presenting.

The winner was first announced as Carey for She Said before Troy's translator made a correction and Kerry Condon was given the award for The Banshees Of Inisherin. The awkward moment was not aired by the BBC, who televised Sunday's ceremony slightly later.

After her win was announced, Kerry said: “Thank you Martin [McDonagh] for this part, and thank you for all the parts you gave me throughout my career. You make me so proud to be an Irish woman.”

She also thanked the “amazing cast” and her family as well as her horses and dogs.

Event host Richard E. Grant joked later that he had a defibrillator for Carey.

A similar mistake happened at the 2017 Oscars where Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty wrongly announced La La Land as the winner for Best Picture, instead of Moonlight.

Shortly after Kerry's win, fellow Banshees star Barry Keoghan won Best Supporting Actor.

The 30-year-old Irish actor sheepishly told the audience he “should have planned this, really” before thanking his co-stars and Ireland.

He also dedicated the award to children from the area he comes from.

The first award of the night, best adapted screenplay, went to All Quiet On The Western Front, with director and screenwriter Edward Berger paying tribute to those fighting in Ukraine. The Netflix epic leads the pack with 14 nominations.

Screenwriter Ian Stokell said the project had been “worth the wait” because the film is anti-war. The Banshees Of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell, and Everything Everywhere All At Once, featuring Michelle Yeoh, follow close behind with 10 nominations each.

A host of huge names are in attendance at this evening's ceremony – Kate Middleton and Prince William included.

Kate, 41, dazzled in a white, floor-length, one-shoulder Alexander McQueen gown.

She made a statement as she paired her dress with with long, black gloves and large, gold floral earrings.

The royal mum-of-three arrived at the event alongside husband Prince William, who looked smart in a black velvet tuxedo, which he has also worn before.
