Nick Owen announced he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer as he addressed his absence from BBC’s Midlands Today.
The legendary broadcaster spoke candidly about his health battle, admitting it was “the worst day of my life” after he received the results in April.
The 75-year-old said it has been a “grim” time for the journalist and his wife Vickie Beevers who has supported him through his recent health woes.
Nick told the BBC: “It was a very grim moment, driving home after that sort of news and ringing people, texting people, my phone went crazy for hours on end.
“And it was a very, very difficult time for me, and indeed for my wife Vicki who was by my side all the time through this, you know.”

“It was grim,” he added.
Nick said he visited a specialist prior to his official diagnosis as it appeared something “dodgy was going on” with his health.
“And then he sent me for a biopsy which he did,” he explained. “And the results of that were the killer, on April the 13th, a date which will forever be imprinted on my mind.
“He told us that it was extensive really and aggressive, and I had prostate cancer full-on, and something needed to be done pretty fast.”
“And that was probably the worst day of my life, or certainly one of them.”
The news comes just three years after the TV anchorman tied the knot with his reflexologist partner, 62, in a quiet ceremony at St Mary the Virgin Church, in Enville in 2020.
Speaking to the Express and Star at the time, Nick said: “We’re both thrilled to bits. It was a very quiet day and we didn’t go to the church until a quarter to three and it was all over by half past.
“We’d been planning to get married a year ago, but twice for various reasons, including coronavirus, we’ve had to put it off.”

Nick first found fame in the 1980s on the TV-am breakfast show after beginning his career on regional newspapers.
He co-hosted Good Morning with Anne and Nick from 1992 to 1996 on BBC One and has been presenting Midlands Today since 1997.
