Bob Geldof received text messages of despair and sorrow from Sinead OConnor before her death

Bob Geldof has revealed that he received text messages from the late Sinéad O'Connor in the weeks leading up to her death that were "laden with desperation and despair and sorrow".

Nothing Compares 2 U singer Sinéad passed away on July 26, aged 56, with her devastated family confirming her death to the Irish Mirror.

In a statement, they said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.

“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Tributes have poured in for the iconic singer, from her fans to her celebrity peers, with Boomtown Rats singer Bob Geldof paying a special tribute during an appearance at Cavan Calling festival in Ireland.

He revealed that he spoke to Sinead just weeks before her death, as the star, who has experienced his own tragedies with the loss of his ex-wife Paula Yates and daughter Peaches from drug-related issues, told the crowd that "you just have to keep on in the face of such tragedies".

The I Don't Like Mondays singer added: “There’s no other option, as all of you know, than to just keep on."

He continued: "Many, many times Sinead was full of a terrible loneliness and a terrible despair. She was a very good friend of mine. We were talking right up to a couple of weeks ago. Some of her texts were laden with desperation and despair and sorrow and some were ecstatically happy. She was like that."

Sinéad is known to have suffered years of mental health battles – she said they were as a result of being physically and sexually abused by her mother as a child.

The singer never got over the death of her late son, Shane, who took his own life in January 2022.

In her final, devastating, social media post on July 17, 2023, Sinéad shared an image of herself and her late son hugging when he was younger, as she wrote: "Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.

"We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

In January 2022, representatives of the Irish singer confirmed that Sinéad's son Shane had died, as officers in Ireland said they recovered a body in the Bray area of Wicklow and their appeal for the missing teenager had ended.

An unverified Twitter account believed to be that of the Nothing Compares 2 U singer posted an emotional tribute to her son after the news broke.

She wrote: “My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

“May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example.

“My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”
