Boy George ‘devastated’ as beloved mum Dinah O’Dowd dies aged 84

Boy George 's mother, Dinah, has passed away at the age of 84.

Confirming the news, the Culture Club singer's representatives said that he is "devastated" by the loss.

They also confirmed that Dinah was surrounded by family, including George, when she passed, and ask for privacy at this time.

Boy George's close friend DJ Fat Tony has since paid tribute to Dinah on Instagram, writing: "God bless you you amazing woman Dinah ….my heart goes out to @boygeorgeofficial and the entire O Dowd family what an incredible beautiful strong woman we will miss you x."

In April 2020, Dinah was hospitalised for two days at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking on Lorraine shortly after her stint at Greenwich Hospital, Boy George explained: "My mum's good, she's back home now. She was in hospital for two days, luckily it was not corona-related so that's good.

"And it wasn't what we initially thought, so everything about it was jut getting her home from the hospital, because obviously with everything that's going on, my mum's 82 so it's not the best place for her to be."

At the time she was hospitalised, Boy George had pleaded with fans to pray for his mum while she recovered.

"My beautiful mum is in the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Woolwich. A problem with her heart or lungs. She's stable but they have said they won't resuscitate her if things go wrong? Apparently it won't work? How can they know. Please pray!"

The I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star has always been close with his mum.

In fact, Dinah spoke lovingly about her son in an interview with the Mirror in November, after he admitted in the Bush Telegraph he might walk from the show.

"George and I are very close and I’m so very proud of him," she said.

"He is always there for me, so his reaction wasn’t a surprise, and I am waiting to hug him when he gets home."

George became very emotional following the arrival of disgraced former MP Matt Hancock in the jungle, talking candidly about Dinah's time in hospital during the pandemic, and claimed he would have walked had she passed away.

Speaking later in the Bush Telegraph, he said: "I don't really know what to do with my feelings. You know, today was obviously quite emotional for me.

"I don't know what it's going to be like, I don't know whether I…I actually don't really know if I want to be here."

In his book Take It Like A Man, George says Dinah was a "cartoon housewife" who "kept going day in, day out" working to feed and clothe her kids.

Talking on Piers Morgan 's Life Stories, he said: "I used to tell my mum to leave my dad when I was like nine.

"I loved my father, don't get me wrong, I really loved him, but he wasn't a good dad and he wasn't a good husband."
