Britney Spears continues to shed more light on what it was like under the control of her father, Jamie Spears.
As you may recall, the pop star began her mega-successful Piece of Me residency in Las Vegas in 2013, and it ran until 2017. However, she noticeably took a break from the shows from November 9 to December 26, 2014. Most people wouldn’t bat an eye at a singer having time off during a massive residency. Everyone needs some downtime to recuperate now and then — that’s a demanding gig doing that show every night!
According to Britney, though, this wasn’t a normal break — Jamie had forced her into rehab for a month! Why? Because she took some “energy supplements.” In her new memoir The Woman In Me, she said her then-boyfriend Charlie Ebersol introduced her to energy-boosting products to help her get through her rigorous show schedule:
“Charlie worked out every day, taking pre-workout supplements and a whole bunch of vitamins. He shared his nutrition research with me and started giving me energy supplements.”
Seems benign enough, right?
But Charlie gave her these supplements without getting approval from her dad. As fans know, Jamie had been the one to oversee her entire medical care since he was her conservator at the time. So this became a huge problem for Britney! She recalled:
“My father didn’t like that. He knew what I ate; he even knew when I would go to the bathroom. So when I started taking energy supplements, he saw that I had more energy onstage and that I was in better shape than I had been.”
Despite Britney believing this supplement regimen was “a good thing” for her health, Jamie didn’t feel the same way at all. He even “started to think that had a problem with those energy supplements, even though they were over-the-counter, not prescription.” Given the power he lorded over her back then, he decided the singer should stop taking them — and then made her go to a treatment facility:
“So he told me I had to get off them, and he sent me to rehab.”
Britney claimed she was sent to a center in Malibu, California, with “a lot” of “serious” people struggling with drug addiction. During her stay, the Circus songstress remembered feeling “scared to be there by self” and hated how her “horrible” dad was “throwing away” in a “place with crack and heroin addicts.”
A month later, Britney got out of rehab. And she immediately “started doing shows again in Vegas like nothing had happened.” Jeez. Britney added:
“Part of that was because my father told me I had to get back out there, and part of it was because I was still so nice, so eager to please, so desperate to do the right thing and be a good girl.”
And this wasn’t the only time the 41-year-old hitmaker had been institutionalized. Britney’s dad sent her away to rehab again in 2019 after her doctor discovered energy supplements in her purse. Wow.
