Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson's relationship just ended—or, at least, the breakup only recently became public knowledge—but the former couple is already surrounded by so much drama.
People first reported the split on May 6. "Cara and Ashley always had their ups and down before, but it's over now," a source told the magazine. "Their relationship just ran its course.”
This week, photos surfaced of Benson hanging out with G-Eazy, and an Instagram fan account posted video footage of them appearing to kiss. "It feels like just a fling for now," a source told People. "She's getting over a breakup."
Fans of the couple (and Delevingne) got very upset in the comments section and on Twitter. "I'm so disappointed, Jesus Christ. We keep on defending her, but look," one wrote. Another wrote, "Can we all make a 'Cara appreciation video?' Like a present for Cara to make her feel good on these days?" But some people defended Benson. "You can’t say they are dating just because of a like and some comments," the user wrote. "Can’t Ashley have friends now? STOP SAYING ASHLEY CHEATED! OR EVEN CARA! They just need friends right now more than ever. ✋?"
The online backlash prompted Delevingne to make a public statement on the matter—though she also appears to have deleted photos of Benson from her Instagram feed. "It's more important than ever to spread love, not hate," Delevingne wrote on her Instagram Stories May 14. "To everyone hating on @ashleybenson please stop. You don't know the truth, only her and I do, and that's exactly how it should be."
Delevingne and Benson were first rumored to be dating after they were spotted hanging out together in May 2018. They officially confirmed the relationship last summer during Pride Month, when Delevingne posted on Instagram a photo of them kissing. “I don’t know because it is Pride, it’s been 50 years since Stonewall happened and I don’t know,” she told E! News at the time. “It’s been just about our one-year anniversary so, why not?”
Benson has not yet commented on Delevingne's latest statement.
