The Amalfi Coast is the inspiration for Carol Kirkwood’s Latest novel
BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood’s new book, Secrets of The Villa Amore, has already made the Sunday Times Top 10 bestseller list, but she has now admitted she is continually suffering the effects of lack of sleep.
In an interview on Chris Evans’ Virgin Radio Breakfast Show to promote the gripping new novel, she caused a stir by admitting: “I try to be asleep at 8pm!”
“I’m constantly suffering from sleep deprivation,” the busy 61-year-old went on to confess while discussing the perils of her fast-paced life.
Her need for sleep sets her apart from the characters she’s invented in her novel, which is set on the picturesque Amalfi Coast, and has an extremely lively storyline.
“The story follows two wine-producing families [whose] lives are intertwined,” Carol explained, revealing that the siblings from each family are expected to have a fairytale marriage but that not all goes to plan.

“Everyone has been invited [to the wedding] from glamorous Hollywood starlets to the mafia, but both families have secrets that could ruin lives and ruin relationships as well,” she teased.
“Murder, jealousy, intrigue, betrayal and romance are all about to be revealed.”
She added that the theme was “escapism” and that she wanted readers to be transported to the Italian idylls she herself has visited on her holidays in the past.
“It’s really an escapist kind of book to take you somewhere glamorous. Visual imagery is so important to me,” she mused.

However, fans may be disappointed to hear that she hasn’t offered up her voice on an audiobook, as she insists her Italian accent is “so bad”.
She hinted that there’ll be upmarket cuisine on the menu, as she announced she wanted readers to be able to picture the delicious dishes, but assured them: “There’s no pizzas in the book – just the romance!”
Carol’s first book was set in Greece, a location she’s been visiting ever since her student days, while her second book was set on the French Riviera, so it’s safe to say she likes a sun-soaked seaside vibe.
Her experience of the Amalfi Coast means she feels able to “write about it with conviction” and share exactly what the idyllic stretch of coastline smells like, right down to the lemons in her limoncello.
Meanwhile, Carol also took the opportunity to clarify regarding a rumour that had apparently been going around about BBC weather presenters no longer being required to wear suits.
She divulged that the decision was taken “in keeping with the rest of the show”, explaining: “The other presenters aren’t wearing suits when they’re out in the countryside.”
She added: “I think we’re allowed to dress a little more casually… [but] hopefully we still look smart on the telly!”
