‘She wants to keep a close eye on him’: Coleen Rooney ‘wants her brother to chaperone husband Wayne to the US’ as he takes on job as head coach of DC United while she is set to stay in UK

Coleen Rooney reportedly wants a family member to chaperone her husband Wayne to the US after he was confirmed as new head coach of his former club DC United.

The WAG, 36, is believed to have suggested that her brother Anthony McLoughlin accompany Wayne, 36, to the US as she wants to ‘keep a close eye on him’ while she is set to remain in the UK.

Wayne and his family previously moved to Washington DC in June 2018 but they struggled to settle there and the former professional footballer became embroiled in a string of incidences.

In December 2018, Wayne was arrested for public intoxication at Washington’s Dulles International Airport and in February 2019, he was seen spending time with a barmaid during a boozy night out in Florida.

It has now been claimed that Wayne has assured his wife that he won’t ‘slip back into bad habits’ during his US trip, while Coleen is expected to stay in England with their four children.

A friend told The Sun: ‘Although she trusts Wayne she knows he can be easily led which is why she’d like her brother or one of Wayne’s brothers to be out there too to keep an eye on him. 

‘It would make Coleen feel a lot happier, it’s something they did before. It helped to keep her up to date with what was going on, and Coleen wants to keep a close eye on him.’

But sources close to Coleen have insisted that Wayne’s new career move was made with her ‘full blessing’.

MailOnline has contacted Wayne and Coleen’s representatives for comment.

He was filmed arriving at Dulles Airport on Sunday night without Coleen and their four children as he closed in on a return to the dug-out at the club he played for in 2018 and 2019.

Coleen is expected to remain in the United Kingdom with their sons – Kai, 12, Klay, nine, Kit, six, and Cass, four – as she reportedly told friends she wouldn’t be moving to the US.

A source close to Coleen told MailOnline: ‘She’s made her views clear to Wayne. There’s no way she will want to go to Washington. The last time, she absolutely hated it there.

‘She doesn’t want to live outside the North West of England, never mind live in Washington again. The family is more settled than it’s ever been. They have four kids who are all in school and all of Coleen’s family live close to her.’

The source added: ‘There’s no way that she’d want to give all of that up to go and live in a place she hates.’

Coleen’s dislike of the US capital emerged in leaked text messages from 2018 sent to Rebekah Vardy during the Wagatha Christie libel trial.

In response to Rebekah asking how things were going, Coleen replied: ‘Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We’re ok thanks its tough being on your own though.

Coleen went on to say: ‘Washington isn’t the best….nice to visit but different to live. Not loads for the kids to do, mostly park, hardly any soft plays and things like that. It’s quite behind the UK, which I never would have thought. 

‘But we will get used to it (I hope). ‘Wayne is loving it, and the kids are fine, settled into school straight away. So really happy they are fine. Thanks for the message love xx.’

In a separate message, she admitted that she ‘never believed in homesickness’ until leaving the UK, adding that she ‘cried every night’ due to missing her family back home.

Wayne’s return to management comes after he left Derby last month following a tumultuous spell where his own stock improved despite chaos off the pitch at the Rams.

The former England, Manchester United and Everton striker has wasted no time being out of the game, although he will have to wait for completion of a visa application to formally take up his new role back in Washington, where he enjoyed a two-year playing spell.

‘DC United announced today that Wayne Rooney has been named as the club’s new head coach,’ the Major League Soccer club said in a statement.

‘Interim head coach Chad Ashton will remain in charge of the team until Wayne Rooney has received his work visa.’

Wayne played for DC United in 2018 and 2019, scoring 25 goals in 52 matches.

The MLS side tweeted: ‘Welcome back, Wayne. The club is excited to announce @WayneRooney as the new head coach of D.C. United.’

Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan, co-chairmen of DC United, said in a joint-statement on the club’s official website: ‘Wayne is a soccer legend and one of the most exciting and dynamic up-and-coming managers in our sport. 

‘He’s already proven in his young coaching career that he knows how to lead a group through adversity. 

‘He has an understanding of our league and what it takes to be successful in Major League Soccer thanks to his two-year stay with us as a player. 

‘The passion he showed while wearing Black-and-Red electrified our city and our club and we are so excited to welcome him back as our Head Coach.’ 

Wayne left League One side Derby County at the end of June having been unable to prevent the crisis-stricken club from relegation out of the Championship.

He received plenty of plaudits for the way he led a club in administration and severe financial difficulties.

The Washington Post reported last week that Rooney is expected to agree to a multi-year contract worth at least $1million (£830,000) annually. He will act as a consultant for DC United until he is granted a work permit, which typically takes two to three weeks.

He will inherit a struggling team with DC second bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference, having won just five of 17 matches so far this season. 

They were thrashed 7-0 by Philadelphia in their latest outing on Saturday, the heaviest defeat in the history of the club.

Wayne takes over from interim coach Chad Ashton, who is expected to return to the assistant coach role he has performed for the last 15 years. They sacked coach Hernan Losada back in April.
