An appearance by Dakota Johnson on Ellen DeGeneres' talk show has gone viral after it became one of the car crash interviews of the year.
The 30-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey actress brought her interview with Ellen, 61, to a halt after they became embroiled in an argument about why Ellen hadn't turned up at Dakota's 30th birthday celebrations.
What started as a throwaway comment by Ellen after Dakota asked why she hadn't turned up, soon became an awkward TV moment as the pair both dug deeper holes for themselves.
The pair began talking about Dakota's party in Malibu when Ellen asked: "How was the party? I wasn’t invited.”
Dakota quickly pointed out that this was not the case. She said: "Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen.”
The actress was appearing to promote her new film, Peanut Butter Falcon, when she explained to the host that she had specifically invited Ellen as she had been given a hard time for not inviting her last year.
Dakota hit out at Ellen, saying: "Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of s*** about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited."
Ellen responded: “Well, who wouldn’t want to be invited to a party?”
Dakota then retorted: “Well, I didn’t even know you liked me."
Ellen assured her: “Of course I like you. You knew I liked you."
There was an awkward silence before Ellen added: "You’ve been on the show many times, and don’t I show like?”
Ellen then protested that she hadn't received an invite but Dakota was not letting it lie and and the audience gasped as she hit back: "Ask everybody. Ask Jonathan, your producer, who says you were.”
After her producers said she was out of town at the time of the party, Ellen joked: “Oh yeah, I had that thing."
Ellen then confessed that she "didn’t remember that until just now," about the invite and thanked Dakota for the thought.
Just when it looked like they could move on from the birthday debacle, Dakota then said that Tig Notaro did a stand-up comedy set and that she was her favourite comedian, which Ellen, a famed comic herself, took as a sleight.
Dakota, quickly noticing her faux pas, quickly added: "… Other than you!”
The actress then pretended to leave the studio as to jokingly finish the interview, before sitting back down and saying: "I’m sorry!”
Ellen was quick to retort that she had been speaking her to number one favourite actress, Jennifer Aniston.
Dakota laughed and admitted: "Gosh, this isn’t going well."
