Doting mum Gemma Atkinson has clapped back at mum-shaming trolls who criticised how she is raising her daughter Mia on social media.
The 38 year old star, who recently became a mum for a second time with baby Thiago, received an unsolicited message on Instagram that questioned whether allowing her daughter Mia to watch certain kinds of programmes on TV was healthy.
The saga all started when Gemma shared an adorable picture of Mia pretending she was “stood on the podium of the CrossFit games”.
In the sweet snap, Mia could be seen with her arms held high and a blanket held behind her like a makeshift flag as she revelled in the awe of such an impressive sporting achievement, that she must have seen on screen or from being near her sport-loving mum.
While many parents would no doubt be thrilled to see their child so enthusiastic about sport, one disgruntled fan reached out to Gemma to condemn her for encouraging Mia.
“Are you not afraid that you are doing to make her body conscious watching all that tv?” Wrote the fan.
They then continued:“…she should be watching kids programmes. Be careful as this type of exposure to kids can cause to be body conscious and have eating problems.”
Sharing a screenshot of the message, Gemma then took to her stories to respond to the claims as she clarified her position and why she would continue to encourage her daughter.
“I received this msg about Mia loving CrossFit. The “should be watching kids programs” baffled me a little…” she began.
“One of our friends is one of the best CrossFit athletes in the world. And whenever she’s been to stay with us, Mia has looked up to her in awe of her physical strength and capabilities in regards to gymnastics etc.”
Gemma then continued: “We also go for ice creams and have pizza every weekend & pic N mix at the cinema. Fab lollies after tea and pancakes on Sundays. We have, (in my opinion) the perfect balance!”
As well as explaining the balance in her life, Gemma also want on to explain that she was “very happy” Mia was so positive about sport and exercise.
“I’m personally very happy that Mia loves sports and that she has strong role models and she CHOOSES to watch the games. I’m sick of watching it tbh. When it’s not CrossFit she loves The Yorkshire Vet or Come Dine with Me. Genuinely!”
“So no, I’m not afraid it’ll case her image problems. I’m pleased it’ll give her confidence, great social skills and a zest for life.”
