BBC presenter Gethin Jones, 42, who has been presenting The One Show with long-time friend Alex Jones, 43, during the coronavirus lockdown, has spoken out about why he was left disappointed after an interview recently. The Welsh TV star also addressed whether he will be filling former host Matt Baker’s presenting spot permanently.

But I was disappointed.

In an interview with OK! Magazine, Gethin, who starred on Celebrity MasterChef this week, mentioned he has “really enjoyed” to be presenting The One Show with Alex after Matt stepped down from his presenting duties in March.

When asked if he was going to take over from Matt, Gethin divulged: “I think it’s all up in the air at the moment because of the pandemic.

“I don’t know what the plan is, but I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve loved going into work and snapping into peoples’ houses as all the interviews have been on Skype,” he remarked.

“But I was disappointed when we had Tom Hanks’ wife Rita on.”

Explaining why, he continued: “I was so looking forward to seeing Tom Hanks’ house as they have a typewriter room, but Rita was in the utility room.”

Gethin, who competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2007 and now works alongside Zoe Ball and Rylan Clark-Neal on Strictly: It Takes Two – revealed his thoughts about Strictly going ahead without a live audience.

The presenter explained to the publication: “I’m not being down on it, but I’d be lying if I said it won’t make a difference.

He went on to add: “But what can you do?

“It’s a shame – but it’s a shame on a global scale that we can’t do things as normal.”

It comes after Stacey Dooley, who won Strictly with her now-boyfriend Kevin Clifton, 37, in 2018, recently suggested a “people’s Strictly” where key workers and NHS staff would compete in the competition instead of celebrities.

While discussing her initiative, Gethin told the Radio Times: “That’s a great idea. I think it would go well.. maybe they will!

“What I love about Strictly, is the people who go out there and surprise you and then the people who you expect to be good and are not necessarily brilliant. I think that’s cool. That is the show!”

Elsewhere, The One Show host Alex opted for a pink outfit on Thursday’s show with Gethin, but one of her accessories failed to impress the latter.

Gethin wasn’t too impressed with Alex’s decision to wear trainer socks with her sparkly rainbow shoes.

The former Blue Peter presenter shared a close-up of her dazzling heels on his Instagram story and wrote to his 74,100 followers: “@alexjonesthomson and her multicoloured… erm, socks!”

Alex, who was clearly amused, reshared the post on her own account and told her 251,000 followers: “Not my most attractive moment.”

The mother-of-two has been presenting The One Show with several different co-hosts recently after Matt stepped down from the programme.

She is currently on a break from the show and has been temporarily replaced by Alex Scott and Kym Marsh in recent weeks.

Matt decided to leave the show after co-hosting the BBC show with Alex for nine years.

The Countryfile star told viewers at the time: “I’ve loved that the One Show has been such a big part of my life for the last nine years.

“I’m continuing with Countryfile and BBC Sport and excited about other opportunities that come my way but most of all I’m looking forward to having dinner with my family and being able to put my kids to bed.”
