Hayden Panettiere has reflected on her tough decision to relinquish custody of her daughter, Kaya.
The Scream actress shares the seven-year-old with her former partner, Wladimir Klitschko.
However, in 2018, she signed papers to give her ex full custody of their little one as she battled drugs and alcohol addiction, a move she described as the ‘hardest thing’ she has done.
During an appearance on the latest episode of Red Table Talk, the 33-year-old opened up about her heartbreak in a candid chat with guest host Kelly Osbourne, Jada Pinkett Smith and her mom, Adrienne Banfield Norris.
‘You thought this was an agreement that you came to, that you felt it was best that your daughter be with her dad,’ Adrienne queried in the clip, obtained by People Magazine.
‘At first it was not, because it wasn’t a discussion,’ she replied. ‘If he had come to me and said, “I think, because of where you’re at right now and your struggles that you’re having, it would be good for her to be over here with me for a while…”
‘If I had probably had enough of a conversation, I would’ve said, okay that makes sense, I get it, I’ll come there to visit and stuff like that.
‘Because of the way that it was done, it was very upsetting. It was the worst, signing those papers, the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life.
‘The papers were to give him full custody. I was going to go work on myself, I was going to get better, and when I got better then things could change and she could come to me, and I could have my time with her. But that didn’t happen.’

Hayden met Wladimir in 2009 and they got engaged in 2013, after a brief split.
She gave birth to Kaya the following year, after which she experienced postpartum depression.
The former couple went their separate ways in 2018, with the Nashville star vowing to work on herself after battling addiction issues.
Following their split, it was decided that Kaya should live with Wladimir in Ukraine, while Hayden focused on herself.
‘It was the hardest thing I could do,’ she told People in July. ‘But the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her. And sometimes that means letting go.
‘This hasn’t been easy and there were a lot of ups and downs.
‘But I don’t regret even the ugliest things that have happened to me. I feel incredibly accomplished. And I feel like I have a second chance.’
Hayden is now staging a Hollywood comeback, reprising her role as the iconic Kirby in slasher franchise Scream, with the upcoming flick slated to be released next year.
