In May, after Willow Smith revealed on “Red Table Talk” she used to cut herself, Jada Pinkett Smith went into instant mom mode.
On Tuesday, Jada told “The MOMspodcast” hosts she had a serious talk with Willow after the show, according to People.
“I wanted to make sure she was okay,” Jada explained. “We went through what happened and in the moment I realized as a mother you also have to give your children space to deal with their own shadow.”
Willow, 17, explained that at age 9, after the success of her hit song “Whip My Hair,” she went into a dark place and was self-harming. “I never talk about it because it was such a short, weird point in my life, but you have to pull yourself … out of it,” Willow said at the time. She even showed her mom the scar.
Thinking about how the incident unfolded without her knowledge, Jada, 47, said there were a lot of things about her own past she never told her mother, Adrienne Banfield-Jones.
“I focused more on how [Willow] got herself out versus what got her there,” Jada added of their off-screen conversation. “I was just most proud about that she could share it in the way she did, which let me know she had come through in a major way that she could put it on the table like that.”
The Season 2 debut of “Red Table Talk” focused on Jada and Will Smith’s marriage.
