Loose Women panellist Charlene White, has branded the Instagram Live display from Jesy Nelson, 30, and Niki Minaj, 38, “hugely embarrassing”. The former Little Mix star appeared with her Boyz collaborator in a bid to defend herself amid accusations that she appeared to be “blackfishing” in the music video of her debut solo single.
Blackfishing is a word used to accuse someone of pretending to be black or mixed-race.
During the livestream, Nicki appeared to hit out at Jesy’s former bandmate of nine years, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, labelling her a “jealous clown” after DMs, which were claimed to be from the singer, were leaked by TikTok star NoHun.
leigh Anne has not addressed her leaked messages criticising Jesy to the TikToker as of yet.
While discussing the messages, Nicki targeted Leigh-Anne when she said: “Immediately that person has to wear a big red clown nose and big clown boots because you’re a big f**king clown.”
Following the scandal, Jesy decided to hit back in the livestream, and failed to try and defend her former bandmate Leigh-Anne as Nicki criticised the leaked messages in front of over 400,000 viewers.
Nicki, who features on the song, said on Instagram: “Y’all gotta stop.”
She added on Twitter: “If you know someone has been suicidal from bullying in the past, why try to get a bunch of people to bully them again about something else?”
Jesy said she was “in a group with two women of colour for nine years” and the subject was never brought up until they recorded her last video with the group, Sweet Melody.
As Jesy began to explain about being messaged by one of her ex-bandmates, Nicki interjected saying people should “focus on your own energy.”
Boyz, which samples Diddy’s song Bad Boys for Life, is Jesy’s first solo release since leaving Little Mix last year.
In the video, the singer is heavily tanned and her hair is styled with wigs and braids. She wears basketball shorts and gold grills, and sings about wanting a boy who’s “so hood, so good, so damn taboo”.
Those who have accused Jesy of blackfishing have argued that it is wrong for white people to profit from imitating black characteristics and culture – when black people themselves have been held back for having the very same characteristics.
And Loose Women’s Charlene was less than impressed by the display.

After tuning in to hear what Jesy and Nicki had to say amid the blackfishing controversy, Charlene dubbed the pair “hugely embarrassing”.
“That* IG live is just… wow. Hugely embarrassing,” Charlene hit out on Twitter.
Charlene’s opinion was met with much support from her followers, as they joined in on the debate to call out Jesy for failing to defend Leigh-Anne.
“Just awful and by her so-called defending, Jesy is giving license for the issues to continue,” fumed one of Charlene’s followers.
“Jesy has thrown Leigh-Anne so far under the bus. There’s no coming back from that. Beyond toxic,” another added.
“This has all gotten so messy. I don’t know whose side I’m on but Jesy shouldn’t have sat there and said nothing when Nicki tore Leigh-Anne down,” someone else insisted.
Meanwhile, a fourth penned: “I’ve lost all respect for those two women after that.”
Jesy’s former Little Mix pals Leigh-Anne, Jade Thirlwall, and Perrie Edwards have now reportedly all unfollowed the Boyz hitmaker.
