Hugh Grant was not having it with the red carpet back-and-forth this weekend!
Of course, the 95th annual Academy Awards took place on Sunday night. And before the show, the Notting Hill actor joined many more of Hollywood’s brightest stars to grace the red carpet and do some pre-show interviews. Y’all know the drill by now after years of this: some pleasantries, some fashion talk, some insights into what each actor thought about this year’s films, blah, blah, blah!
But that’s not what happened with Hugh on Sunday evening!! The Love Actually star drew attention to himself in the wrong way when he showed up on the carpet for a chat with model Ashley Graham, who was helping to co-host the pre-Oscars show.
Graham peppered Grant with a few really basic questions, including what he likes about attending the Oscars. To that query, he called the show “fascinating,” and joked that “the whole of humanity” was in attendance for the “vanity fair” event. But when the Sports Illustrated supermodel appeared to blow past that literary reference and connect the comment instead to the Vanity Fair after-party, Grant took a heel turn!
Ashley then asked who the 62-year-old star was rooting for at this year’s awards show, and he replied with a dud:
“No one in particular.”
Ooookay…
It got even worse when Graham followed up with another standard interview question — “who are you wearing?” — and Hugh showed some annoyance in his curt response:
“Just my suit.”
Trying to make the best of it, Graham joked that Grant himself couldn’t have made the suit. She asked who designed it, but Hugh wasn’t having it. He simply said:
“I can’t remember my tailor.”
Ouch!
The 35-year-old model then tried yet another angle. She asked Grant about his cameo in the much-loved film Glass Onion. Sadly, he clearly didn’t want to go down that road, either. He simply responded:
“Well, I’m barely in it. I’m in for about three seconds.”
Hugh, dude, we know it’s just a pre-show red carpet thing, but GIVE US SOMETHING!!!
Realizing it just wasn’t meant to be, Ashley cut her losses and moved on with this transition to close:
“Well, OK, thank you so much, it was nice to talk to you.”
But Hugh wasn’t done there!! The About A Boy star delivered a tepid one-liner to finish. He said “yeah” in a gloomy tone, and then appeared to roll his eyes as he moved on down the red carpet! So RUDE!! Ch-ch-check out the awkward exchange for yourself via the video (below):
Oof!!
Quickly, thousands of viewers took to Twitter to react to the cringeworthy interview. As you can see (below), they were somewhat divided in their assessment! A few loved Hugh’s salty quips, while others were mad at him for being rude to Graham while she was just trying to do her job:
“Ashley Graham was so sweet and professional with Hugh Grant on the interview… and he’s just a d**k”
“Y’all Hugh Grant is a jerk. He was SO rude to Ashley Graham on the red carpet”
“He’s giving her nothing”
“He made a reference to Vanity Fair, the Thackery novel which took its title from John Bunyan’s notion of Vanity Fair – a place where worldly goods are prized above all else. The interviewer thought he meant Vanity Fair magazine.”
“Hugh will come to the event, but he will give you NOTHING.”
“Hugh was there for the goodie bag.”
“He has a point though- I thoroughly enjoyed The Glass Onion, but don’t recall his three seconds on screen.”
“HIS FACE AT THE END. He’s my new favorite lmao”
“I don’t like that, he’s being shady & making her work way too hard”
“The tension is amazing”
“Do better Hugh Grant. The person interviewing you is doing it for people who watch your movies and put money in your pocket.”
“What a douche. Not that we didn’t already know”
“Hugh Grant using the term vanity fair, meaning frivolity, and her thinking he was referring to the after party is as good a moment as my organic lavender oat milk kona latte was this morning.”
Damn!
FWIW, just last week, Hugh gave an interview to Total Film about his recently-filmed role in Dungeons and Dragons. Regarding the production of that flick, he admitted to getting upset with a woman on set who got in his sight line while shooting a scene.
But, as he explained to the mag, he incorrectly pegged the woman as a producer only to find out the real story later:
“I lost my temper with a woman in my eye line on day one. I assumed she was some executive from the studio who should have known better. Then it turns out that she’s an extremely nice local woman who was the chaperone of the young girl .”
After “a lot of groveling,” Grant was able to make things right with that woman. So maybe there should be a fair bit of groveling here, too?! Red carpet frustrations or not, there’s no reason to take it out on innocent Ashley Graham!!
What do U think about it, Perezcious readers??
