EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: I wanted to wear black after split-up, says Helena Bonham Carter
Renowned for her eccentric dress sense, Helena Bonham Carter has revealed that she wanted to wear only black to reflect her ‘grief’ after she split up with Hollywood film director Tim Burton.
‘People don’t necessarily know how to treat you,’ says the star of films including The King’s Speech, A Room With A View and Enola Holmes.
‘There’s a lot of things we should just tell people about when dealing with grief. If you’re in any kind of grief, either from divorce or losing somebody, you talk about it, you don’t avoid it.
‘I remember doing the school gate and feeling so vulnerable. Meeting my best friends was fine, but not people I don’t know. It was like I had no skin.

‘We should bring back a uniform for mourning. I wanted to wear something to indicate to people I’m not my normal self: I’m in mourning and I’m under reconstruction.’
Bonham Carter, 56, has two children with the celebrated director of Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice, 64. They split up in 2014 after a 13-year relationship but were never wed.
However, she says: ‘I went through a painful divorce. I really came a cropper with some people in my divorce. Sometimes, friends don’t know what to do and it’s split loyalty.’ The couple lived in three conjoined houses in North London, two decorated to each of their tastes and a third home for their children and live-in nanny.
Now, she is going out with Rye Dag Holmboe, an art historian 22 years her junior. And she’s clear what the most important thing in their relationship is.
‘The shortest distance between two people is laughter, not sex,’ she says on the podcast Therapy Works. ‘Sex is overrated — but that might say a lot about my sex.’

For the very nearly 260 years they were at Spains Hall — a splendid, Grade I Elizabethan pile in Essex — the Ruggles-Brise family managed without having their own TV/film studio. It’s a deficiency the new owners — Jamie Oliver and his wife, Jules — have rectified. They’ve just been given the go-ahead to convert a barn for film studio use. Baronet Sir Timothy Ruggles-Brise’s eldest son, Archie, manages the 2,000-acre estate which the family retained. Three years ago, he reintroduced beavers there. I trust Oliver lacks a recipe for beaver stew.
Jaggers are not just here for the beer
Who are these two old chaps popping out for a pint? Only Sir Mick Jagger, 79, and his brother, Chris, 74, who were spotted at The Half Moon in Putney, South-West London.
They went to watch Slim Chance, the band formed by the late Small Faces star Ronnie Lane.
It’s a pub known to Sir Mick, as the Rolling Stones played there on numerous occasions when starting out.
Amusingly, the following evening a tribute act, The Rolling Stoned, was due to perform. Imagine if Jagger had been in the audience!

Sir Patrick Stewart is boldly going where no Shakespearean thespian has gone before. The 82-year-old Star Trek captain has joined TikTok, the teenagers’ favourite video-sharing app. Introducing himself in front of a crackling fire, with a cheery, ‘Hi. I am joining TikTok and I thought I should celebrate it with the 12 days of Christmas’, the Yorkshireman reads from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. No doubt, Sir Patrick has been encouraged by his wife, Sunny Ozell, an American singer 39 years his junior.
Ed’s bar isn’t blossoming
Ed Sheeran has made hundreds of millions from his music, but he has yet to turn a profit at Bertie Blossoms, his bar in Notting Hill, West London.
Newly filed accounts reveal That Dive Bar Portobello, through which the pop superstar from Suffolk runs the business, slipped a further £204,000 into the red last year.
The balance sheet for the company, which he set up in 2018, discloses net current liabilities of £861,000 as at December 2021. After accounting for assets at £120,000 the business was left with a £768,000 deficit.
Sheeran said last year that Bertie Blossoms had struggled to survive in the pandemic. ‘Unless you’re Gordon Ramsay and you have loads of restaurants, it’s very difficult.’
There will be no white Christmas for Sir Cliff Richard, who’s revealed he’s off to sunny Florida. ‘I’ve been invited to go back to Fort Lauderdale,’ says the Peter Pan of pop, 82. ‘I know a bunch of people there.’ He adds: ‘It’s funny, America has given me a whole new lifestyle. I don’t get recognised there.
‘I went to a supermarket and a guy said: “I think I know you. Tell me your name.” I said: “Cliff Richard”. He said: “Keith Richards . . . I knew it.”’ Whoever thought the clean-living Bachelor Boy would be mistaken for Keef, the epitome of sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll?
Baxendale’s still all loved -up — with hubby
Cold Feet star Helen Baxendale is keen to show she’s still got the hots for her husband.
The actress, 52, married film-director husband David Williams almost 30 years ago, but they appeared to be in the first throes of passion as she gazed adoringly into his eyes at a cafe called Love My Human, in Chelsea, West London.
Even when Williams took a call on his mobile phone, Baxendale embraced him enthusiastically.
‘They couldn’t keep their hands off each other,’ an onlooker tells me.
The star hit the headlines when she refused to fly to America to reprise her role as Emily in smash-hit sitcom Friends because she was bringing up her baby.
