Inside Sandra Redknapp’s devastating family tragedy decade before Harry won IAC

Harry Redknapp and his wife Sandra couldn’t have looked more thrilled when he won I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! on Sunday night.

But behind their obvious delight at being reunited was a sadness they’ve both carried for the last 10 years.

Because they were struck by family tragedy in 2008, that hit the family hard and one that led to tears at Frank Lampard’s wedding to wife Christine seven years later.

On April 24, 2008 Sandra received the news that she was dreading, that her twin sister Patricia had passed away in hospital.

Pat, 58, was admitted ten days earlier but succumbed to severe pneumonia, leaving her son Frank – then a footballer with Chelsea – feeling devastated.

When he met Christine Bleakley a year later, it was Sandra that he turned to as he sought blessing for a relationship with the TV presenter.

The passing of his mother was at the forefront of Frank’s mind on his wedding day in 2015, when he paid tribute to Pat during his speech.

He had once described himself as a ‘mummy’s boy’ and had turned to his Auntie Sandra to help with some his life’s big decisions.

Frank had always wished that his mum had met The One Show host and got ‘very choked up’ when speaking about her absence during the wedding.

Her death led to Sandra and Harry becoming fundraising presidents of Southampton-based charity Leukaemia Busters.

It may have made Harry winning in the jungle a bittersweet moment, as Sandra probably would have liked Pat to have seen him taking on all that I’m A Celebrity could offer.
