JK Rowling has broken her silence after she was absent from the highly anticipated Harry Potter reunion.
The world renowned author has received backlash in recent years aftercoming off as transphobic in a series of controversial tweets.
Many Harry Potter fans thought this may have been the reason she wasn’t invited to take part in the reunion alongside the likes of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, but she’s since insisted that she was invited but simply declined the offer.
Speaking with Graham Norton on Virgin Radio, she said: “I was asked to be on that and I decided I didn't want to be a part of it."
JK added: "It was about the films not the books, quite rightly. That was what the anniversary was about. So no one said don't [do it]… I was asked to do it and I decided not to."
She also clarified she was never advised against making an appearance on the reunion show.
The author had tweeted about an article in 2020 entitled "Creating a more equal post COVID-19 world for people who menstruate".
Commenting on the title, the now-57 year old wrote: "'People who menstruate.' I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomund?"
Following JK’s controversial comments on people who menstruate, some of the Harry Potter cast spoke out in support of the trans community with Daniel leading the way.
He explained at the time of JK’s tweets that while the author "is unquestionably responsible for the course my life has taken, as someone who has been honoured to work with and continues to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and just as a human being, I feel compelled to say something at this moment”.
He went on: "Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I."
Emma Watson has more recently appeared to make a dig at the wizarding world franchise creator at this year's BAFTA awards.
It came as awards ceremony host Rebel Wilson, 42, welcomed the Hermione Granger icon to the stage with a classic joke.
"Here to present the next award is Emma Watson," she began. "She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch."
In response, 31 year old Emma emphasised: "I’m here for ALL the witches."
