Joanna Lumley recalled an awkward meeting after being introduced to the Queen at an intimate lunch. The Absolutely Fabulous actress has met Her Majesty on a number of different occasions.
However, one occasion saw the 75-year-old brand herself a “fool” after an interesting conversation she shared with the monarch.
The model and activist dished all in a recent interview after being invited to Buckingham Palace for lunch with eight guests.
Joanna recalled being in the drawing room before being introduced to the Queen.
She explained it was “scary” to meet the royal and admitted her nerves slightly got the better of her.
Joanna was accompanied by a policewoman and a judge when she met Her Majesty.
“We’d got onto the subject of drugs, and I said that I thought if drugs were made legal – for instance, if cocaine came between cough mixture and corn plasters – that it would knock out all the drug barons and all the world’s villainy,” she told The Telegraph.
“I mean, what made me suddenly rant off like that?”
She later scolded herself for discussing drugs with the Queen.
She continued: “Afterwards I thought, ‘You fool, Joanna, you FOOL!’
“The Queen didn’t want to hear your opinions about drugs!’
The small-screen star said that the monarch didn’t contribute to the conversation but had asked the actress to continue sharing her thoughts.
“She’s got this clever way of saying, ‘How interesting, do tell me more, do go on’, which just makes you ramble on,” the actress commented.

Joanna’s anecdote comes as she recently shared heartwarming anecdotes about Her Majesty to feature in her latest book, A Queen of All Seasons.
The historical hardback promises royal fans “first-hand writings, insights, and snapshots” of the reserved British Head of State, ahead of the highly anticipated Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next summer.
Joanna, who is a long-term supporter of the British monarchy, has now offered a memoir of royal experiences with fans.
Meanwhile, the actress will be seen joining adventurer Sacha Dench in her latest documentary – set to air tonight – as the pair travel around the UK.
Sacha was filmed taking to the skies, while Joanna tagged along by land, as the pair met environmental heroes along the way who showed them surprising and fascinating ways to live more planet-friendly lives.
The film sees Joanna head to Scotland to meet Sacha, to see her green, clean electric paramotor in action for the first time.
Joanna Lumley and the Human Swan airs tonight on ITV at 9pm.
