EXCLUSIVE: ‘The psychological effects never go away’: Julia Bradbury opens up about her battle with cancer as she dazzles in a stunning blush ruffled gown at National Television Awards
Julia Bradbury cut a glamorous figure as she hit the red carpet at the National Television Awards in London on Thursday evening.
The broadcaster, 52, looked incredible in a blush pink ruffled gown as she spoke exclusively to MailOnline about the long term effects of cancer, following her diagnosis in September 2021.
Julia’s documentary Breast Cancer and Me was shortlisted for an award at Thursday’s ceremony only to be pipped at the post by Kate Garraway’s own Caring for Derek – walking away with the coveted prize for a second year in a row.

Speaking about her decision to lay herself bare in the documentary she said: ‘People have mentioned the fact that they’ve used the word brave.
‘I don’t think I was brave, to be absolutely honest.. It was for me, it was quite cathartic and it helped me process all of the information I was going through’.
She went on to say that documenting the journey had helped the families and friends of cancer patients understand what it’s like to be diagnosed with the disease.
‘When you’re told you have cancer and it does implode your world and it’s psychologically tough and there’s so much that you go through’.

‘[The documentary] Has meant that people understand that and they realise it doesn’t just it doesn’t just go away 12 months later, it stays with you’.
Discussing the honour of being nominated she said: ‘For me, every mention is an awareness about breast cancer’.
‘One in seven women will suffer from breast cancer in their lifetimes and it has a huge emotional and real impact on your life. And I’m, I’m just keen to spread as much awareness as possible, and this night helps that. Of course’.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2021, Julia, kept her illness a secret at the 2021 NTAs a month later, instead arriving with a beaming smile and support for her colleagues who were hoping to bag a gong.
She went on to gush about her ‘incredibly supportive’ pal Ben Shepard and said that she couldn’t wait to see him after last years ceremony.
‘I was here with him this time last year and I couldn’t tell him I knew [She had cancer]. Yeah, and I knew I was about to have a mastectomy. Yeah, but I couldn’t tell him really tough’.
Chatting: Speaking about it on Thursday’s This Morning she said Ben wondered why she wasn’t drinking on the typically boozy occasion the television industry
Speaking about it on Thursday’s This Morning she said Ben wondered why she wasn’t drinking on the typically boozy occasion the television industry.
‘I spent a lot of time hanging out with my friend Ben [Shephard] and a lot of us were hanging around in the corridors… all of the celebrations were going on,’ Julia told Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
‘There was a moment when the wonderful Kate Garraway won for her documentary, and everybody started talking about it when she won.
‘Everyone was saying “Oh gosh, we just never know what is going on, you never know what’s happening at home, you don’t know what people are dealing with”.
Friends and colleagues: Julia said Ben Shephard asked her why she wasn’t drinking – but she couldn’t reveal her diagnosis because she hadn’t told her children (pictured on Mystery Map)
‘And Ben said to me, “Why aren’t you drinking Bradders? What’s going on? Are you going to have a glass of champagne or some vodka?”
‘And I couldn’t say anything because I hadn’t told my children yet, and I hadn’t been open about it.
‘So I really wanted to tell him more than anything. But it was a very strange night being surrounded by all of that and having to hold it in.
‘Everyone was like, “Why are you leaving at 10?!”, but I just had to.’
This year’s NTAs were broadcast live from a brand new venue of Wembley’s OVO Arena with Joel Dommett hosting.
Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby were booed by some members of the audience at the National Television Awards when This Morning was announced as a contender for the Best Daytime Award.
The presenters found themselves at the centre of the ‘queuegate’ controversy’ in September when they were accused of skipping the queue to see the Queen lying in state, which they both denied.
Despite the criticism the broadcasters received, the show still took home the Daytime gong, with Phillip saying the award means ‘so much to us every year, especially this year’.

Taking to the stage after the win, Phillip said: ‘Please don’t think we ever get complacement and please don’ tthink we ever take it for granted. This means so much to us every year, especially this year. We have the best boss.’
Holly added: ‘This Morning has a very special relationship with you, you make our show for us, you really do. All these guys on the stage here, Alison [Hammond] and Dermot [O’Leary], Rochelle [Humes] and Vernon [Kay], Josie [Gibson], everyone. Thank you for all your support.’
