Julie Powell dead – food writer who inspired movie ‘Julie and Julia’ dies aged 49

Julie Powell – a food writer who inspired the hit film Julie and Julia due to her blog – has died at the age of 49.

Her family announced that she died of a cardiac arrest in her home in Olivebridge, New York.

In 2002, the food blogger inspired the 2009 movie Julie and Julia after she wrote about making the 524 recipes in Julia Child's book, Mastering The Art of French Cooking, in her blog Julie/Julia Project.

Not only did this lead to the movie which starred Amy Adams and Meryl Streep, it also led to Julie's hit 2005 memoir Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen.

In 2003, food editor Amanda Hesser wrote in the New York Times: "Her writing was so fresh, spirited – sometimes crude! – and so gloriously unmoored to any tradition … The internet democratized food writing, and Julie was the new school’s first distinctive voice.”

Julie went on to appear in cooking shows like Iron Chef America and The Martha Stewart Show.

She also wrote for Food & Wine, Bon Appétit and The New York Times, as well as winning the James Beard Award twice.

Julie is survived by her husband Eric Powell, brother Jordon and parents.

She married her husband in 1998 after they met while playing the romantic leads in a high school production of All My Sons by Arthur Miller.

Julie even wrote about their marriage in her 2009 book, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession.

The book described an extramarital affair she had and one her husband had later.

Praying tribute to his sister, Eric told The New York Times: “She loved to be onstage, and loved just being over the top and having everyone watch her." He added that she was “the most experimental and sophisticated cook among us, and we were all people who cooked.”

Julie's editor Judy Clain also told the publication: "She had so much talent and emotional intelligence. I only wish she could have found the next thing.”

She also told Sky News: "We are sending our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved Julie, whether personally or through the deep connections she forged with readers of her memoirs."
