Kate Garraway has confessed her daughter Darcey felt she had to ask if her mum was thinking of "killing herself" amid her husband Derek Draper's ongoing health battle.

Derek, 53, was taken to hospital last March after contracting coronavirus and remained there for over a year due to complications from the disease before returning home last month.

Appearing on This Morning to speak to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, Kate, also 53, explained that her two children Darcey, 15, and 11 year old William were taking care of her in their own way while her husband was in hospital.

"I think they were at times wondering, you know, was I going to be okay. Was I going to be able to keep going. I do put that in the book," she told viewers on ITV today.

Kate continued: "Darcey at one point actually said, 'Mum, are you going to kill yourself?'"

Holly, 40, gasped at Kate's admission before saying: "Oh my God," as Kate continued: "Out of the blue. The thing is is that sounds horrific obviously, but if you know Darcey, she's really blunt and she will always go to the most awful thing she can imagine and work her way back.

"At times that can be, 'You're not wearing that are you mum,' cause that's the most awful thing she can imagine, but she just came out with that sentence and I said, 'Oh my God! No, why would you think that?'"

Kate explained that her daughter said she didn't think she would, but wanted to "check".

Mum-of-two told her teenage daughter that "if anything it was the absolute opposite," before explaining she got scared that Darcey would even think of that.

"She [Darcey] was like, 'Oh well don't make a big thing of it.' But they showed at the very least that she wanted affirmation. And also made me realise that she wasn't just worried about her dad but maybe thinking about me and her brother too."

Kate also said that her children began taking interest in things she wanted to do, which made her realise they were trying to comfort her.

She said: "I don't think I realised how much they were sort of taking care of me quite a lot along the way. The first moment I think was when they suddenly wanted to watch Father Brown.

"And I was like, 'This is a very odd thing for teenagers to be choosing to watch,' because it's so comforting and everybody gets wrapped up, I realised it was because they knew that I loved it and they wanted to sort of do things for me."

It comes as Kate recently revealed her husband Derek, 53, can still barely talk almost a month after returning home from hospital.
