Kate Garraway has shared her horror at being told that she could "get out" of marriage to Derek Draper.

Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital in March 2020 after showing symptoms of coronavirus. He was put into an induced coma to help his recovery and woke up for the first time in October last year to tell doctors he was in pain.

The deadly bug "attacked everything", leaving him with kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas, as well as heart failure after beating the virus.

Now, speaking in her ITV documentary Finding Derek, which airs on ITV at 9pm tonight, Kate recounted how she was encouraged to leave her husband as his health battle is "not what she signed up for".

"Somebody said to me the other day, 'You are allowed to say "this isn't what I signed up for" and get out'," she explained.

Kate, who is considering quitting her role on Good Morning Britain to care for Derek, continued: "And I was like, 'Oh my god.' I mean, I know they meant it weirdly kindly, as if almost giving me license.

"But I said, 'I can't think that! He's in there!'"

It comes as the TV presenter revealed she has converted her home so it is ready for when Derek is able to return from hospital.

The 53 year old transformed the ground floor of her London home so Derek can use it when he can come back to his own house after a year fighting various health battles.

Kate has made her home wheelchair accessible and has added a hospital bed in the lounge, which will become Derek’s new bedroom.

TV star Kate will show the adjustments she has made to her home in the upcoming documentary.

The changes were made to the family’s home last year in the hope he could visit, but then the country was plunged into another lockdown.

Kate has been unable to visit Derek since Christmas due to the national lockdown. Meanwhile, Derek has remained in hospital and his condition has not improved so a home visit won’t happen soon.

Kate explained: “Things have regressed a little bit this year since January, but how much that is to do with the restrictions of not being able to visit, is unclear.

“It felt like we were moving forward at Christmas, now it feels like we’ve slipped back.

“And I’ve felt like I’m sort of hanging over the side of a ship, trying to hold onto him, so that when he kind of bobs up from this ocean of unconsciousness, you can see him sort of click in and you don’t know whether it’s because he can suddenly find a way to get out.”
