Kate Middleton pays subtle tribute to late Queen Elizabeth at King’s Palace reception

Kate Middleton paid subtle tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday evening (December 6) as she and husband Prince William made their way to Buckingham Palace.

The Princess of Wales, 40, was seen wearing a gorgeous red embellished Jenny Packham gown, complete with a tiara and earrings which both have emotional ties to the late Queen.

The Lotus Flower tiara is the same tiara she wore at a diplomatic reception at the Palace in 2013, and again in 2015 for the China state banquet.

It was originally commissioned by the Queen Mother in 1923 when she had asked the royal jeweller to create the diadem specifically for her and was originally designed to sit low on the head.

She also specifically requested for the tiara to be made using diamonds and pearls from a necklace that had been given to her by her husband, King George VI, just six months earlier.

And following Edward VIII's abdication from the throne in 1936, Princess Elizabeth sported the tiara in a series of portraits that were commissioned ahead of her father King George VI's coronation.

But after the death of King George VI, the Queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret, began wearing the Lotus Flower tiara, which has also been referred to as the Papyrus tiara.

Kate's drop diamond earrings were also a nod to the monarch having once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II.

Over the top of her gown, she wore a blue Royal Victorian Order sash and the late Queen’s Family Order, which could be seen on a yellow ribbon that was pinned to Kate's dress.

Sat beside her was William, 40, who could be seen wearing a classic black tuxedo with a white tie, and his military medals pinned to his chest.

The royal couple were on their way to join King Charles III and the Queen Consort for the first Diplomatic Corps reception in three years, as hundreds of foreign ambassadors gather for the affair in the state rooms of the Palace.

The reception saw Their Majesties meet representatives of countries accredited to the Court of St. James.

The last Diplomatic Corps reception, which is usually an annual affair, was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace in December 2019.

It is usually held every December, but there were no receptions in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It comes as the royals were once again rocked by the actions of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who recently released a trailer for their "explosive" new Netflix documentary.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are due to make a red-carpet appearance at the Ripple of Hope Awards in New York on December 6.

According to the Mirror, tickets for the exclusive event are reportedly selling for upwards of $1 million (£847,000).

Harry and Meghan are attending the event with the hopes they can accept the Ripple Of Hope Award for their racial justice and mental health work from Robert F Kennedy Human Rights (RFKHR) organisation.

Previous winners include Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
