Lady Gaga captivated audiences with a raw performance at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night – but viewers were a little distracted. 

The singer-turned-actress, 36, appeared on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to deliver a surprise performance of Hold My Hand, the Oscar-nominated song from Top Gun: Maverick.

Gaga had originally been expected to skip the show due to the filming demands of the sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, but, in a change of plans, the star was confirmed to be performing early on Sunday morning.

The rendition had a rootsy, rock-band production, as opposed to the slick version heard on the original soundtrack, and was interrupted by whoops and hollers from the enthusiastic live audience.

However, despite the amazing performance, viewers at home were distracted by the questionable camera work.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: "This camera could not be any closer to Lady Gaga’s face."

"The Oscar for Worst Cinematography goes to whoever thought it would be neat to stare up Lady Gaga's nose the ENTIRE friggin' song," another agreed.

One person slammed the intense camera work, writing, "Why are we so close to lady gaga’s face i feel uncomfortable."

"Love that song but really didn’t need to be up Lady Gaga’s nose," penned another.

Befitting the last-minute nature of the performance, Gaga was more dressed-down than she’s ever been for a televised performance, belting out her ballad in a T-shirt, shorts and with little apparent in the way of hair or makeup glam.

Her casual attire was world's away from the 'champagne' carpet look she was pictured in earlier – a glamorous black Versace gown.

She had paired the designer dress with an extremely smoky eyeshadow look and bright red lipstick.

The star, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, was nominated alongside Rihanna for Best Original Song.

However, the pop icons lost out to M M Keeravani, who scooped the gong.

He wrote the award-winning song Naatu Naatu from Bollywood blockbuster RRR, and has already seen great success during the 2023 awards season, having scooped best song accolades at both the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards

The 61-year-old said: “I grew up listening to The Carpenters and now here I am with the Oscars.”

He went on to sing: “There was only one wish on my mind…RRR has to win, pride of every Indian, and must put me on top of your world.”

The songs lyrics were by Chandrabose.

Lady Gaga previously won an Oscar in 2019 for Best Original Song for the track Shallow from A Star Is Born, going viral for her emotion-packed performance with her co-star in the film, Bradley Cooper.
