‘It felt like we’ve lost our grandmother’: Luke Evans shares his remorse at the Queen’s death and says he wanted to ‘come home to London’ the moment he heard the news

Luke Evans has shared how he felt when he heard the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

The actor, 43, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, to speak about his work with The Prince’s Trust, saying the loss was akin to the nation losing a ‘grandmother’.

He explained how he had been flying when he got the announcement and that it had made him want to ‘come home to London.’

He said: ‘I was flying to New York [from LA] and as they called us for the plane they announced she’d died and it felt like we’ve lost our grandmother and all I wanted to do was come home to London.’

Luke discussed the parallels to the death of the Queen Mother in 2002, saying: ”The Queens mother died the day I arrived in London to live as a teenage and it felt like we were mourning together.’

Elsewhere in the chat, Luke opened up about working with King Charles III, saying: ‘Charles made me feel a million dollars finding something I’m interested in and talking about it…’

‘The prince’s trust has helped so much over 50 years and still is for young people who may not have had the best start in life.’ 

The monarch’s death was confirmed and a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow’.

Her son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, is now King Charles III, as the world grieves his mother, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

And as her son accedes to the throne, there will also be a celebration of her historic 70-year reign that saw her reach her Platinum Jubilee this year – a landmark unlikely to be reached again by a British monarch.

Charles, the King, said: ‘The death of my beloved mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.

‘We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

‘During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.’
