While this Friday marks Good Friday for many families around the world, it also holds a special significance for Married at First Sight contestant Zoe Clifton as April 7th is also the day of her first anniversary with “wife” Jenna Robinson.
The couple first met last year while taking part in the nerve wracking dating show Married at First Sight UK, which aims to match people up based on psychology rather than traditional attraction and chemistry.
Although there was no guarantee that either star would find love on the show, the pair managed to hit the jackpot with each other, and are still going strong 365 days later.
In a heartwarming post to celebrate their milestone, Zoe took to Instagram to share a carousel of photographs that showcased some of their favourite moments together, including from their wedding ceremony when they first said “I do”.
Reflecting on their journey, Zoe wrote: “ The day we met > Home-stays > Vow renewals > Our first Christmas > Casually hearing our voices in Asda > Our AFTERMAFS.”
"It’s probably been the best year of my life and I feel very thankful that I gave into my sister moaning and sent the application in…”
Zoe also took a moment to thank the show’s panel of experts for matching her up with Jenna, as she gave a sweet shoutout of thanks to Charlene Douglas, Paul C Brunson and Mel Schilling for their expertise and matchmaking on the most recent series of MAFS UK.
In her own post to mark the special day, Jenna also paid tribute to Zoe, as she celebrated their first year together.
“1 year of knowing you,” she began. “The most extraordinary year to start our extraordinary life together.. you make me smile like this everyday @zoeclifton."
Before finally describing the past twelve months as “A lesbian fairytale come true.”
During their time on the show, initially Zoe and Jenna couldn’t have seemed more different, with passionate environmentalist and Vegan Jenna seemingly at odds with her meat loving, vegan-food hating partner Zoe.
Zoe loved exercise, Jenna loathed it. One lived in Staffordshire, the other in Blackpool. Zoe was keen to start a family, Jenna couldn't be certain that's what she wanted.
However over the course of the experiment, the pair managed to showcase exactly what compromise in a marriage meant, as they began to accept each others differences rather than seeking to change them, and found a new kind of balance and synergy that played on their strengths.
Which isn’t to say the couple didn’t have their rocky moments, as they did butt heads on more than one occasion particularly when it came to Jenna's Veganism – but it was their commitment to the experiment, and their openness to compromise and change that have proven to be the recipe for success and a sustainable relationship.
