Doc Martin to come to 'dramatic conclusion' says Martin Clunes

Martin Clunes is a staple of British television, but away from the cameras he has often described his first marriage as a “failure” and “rotten.”

The 61-year old Doc Martin star first married actress Lucy Aston in 1990, but the marriage was short-lived and the pair separated seven years later. 

The breaking point that led to their divorce was apparently a “scathing insult” during a restaurant showdown, according to The Mirror. 

After their wedding came a year-long honeymoon period, which soon dwindled when Martin landed big TV roles and Lucy was working in a health food shop. 

This apparently caused “friction” between the couple and towards the end of their marriage, Lucy claimed that Martin became “dull” and “boring.”

After the pair’s passionate sex life decreased, things got out of control when Martin apparently didn’t invite Lucy to a party he was throwing. 

The next evening, the couple headed to their favourite Chinese restaurant. During the meal, Martin apparently yelled at Lucy: “You are an embarrassment.” 

Lucy knew in that moment that their marriage was over and later spoke out about her divorce in 1997 in an interview with The Mirror. 

She said: “He told me I was boring and different and I just thought: ‘No more.’

“I stood up and said ‘thanks for dinner – this is the end’ and stormed out. I sat in the car shaking with rage.

“Later I went back and Martin was sitting there, surrounded by take- away cartons filled with our meal. 

“He just looked at me. I took off my gold wedding ring, slammed it on the table and walked out. 

“We both knew it was over. I was furious when I found out he had gone to a party without telling me.

“Worse than that, he had said he was going out with just a couple of male actor friends. He tried to make out he had told me, but the truth is he just didn’t want me there.” 

Martin is currently married to his second wife Phillippa Braithwaite. They married in 1997. 

She is an executive producer for Doc Martin as well as being a producer for Martin’s recent series Manhunt. They share a daughter named Emily who was born in 1998.
