Meghan Markle spent her first Christmas at Sandringham in 2017 after becoming engaged to her now husband, Prince Harry.
While traditionally members of the Royal family wait to be married before they invite their partners along for the festive period, the former Suits star broke the mould and celebrated with her future in-laws before she actually said “I do”.
But joining such a famous family comes with a lot of pressure (which Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have opened up on in their recent Netflix documentary), from wearing the right outfit to saying the right thing.
Meghan reportedly struck gold the first time she presented her grandmother-in-law with a Christmas gift.
The Royal family are said to have a long-standing tradition of buying each other impractical gifts and joke presents, and in previous years, have swapped items with each other that have caused lots of laughs.
Past gifts are said to have included Kate Middleton’s ‘grow your own girlfriend kit’ to Prince Harry, and a shower cap with "ain't life a b***h” written on it that Harry gave to his grandmother.
Apparently the Duke also gifted the Queen a Big Mouth Billy Bass singing toy, that according to the Sussex's unofficial biography by Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand “was said to sit proudly in Balmoral."
For Meghan’s turn, the 41 year old purchased a singing hamster toy for the Queen, which – according to The Daily Star – made the late monarch “burst out laughing.”
On receiving the gift, it was reported the late monarch also said that “it can keep my dogs company.”
A royal source added that: “Meghan brought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty.
"It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.”
Meghan is also said to have gifted Prince William a spoon that had ‘cereal killer’ engraved onto it, which according to Scobie and Durand’s book, was a hit.
Aside from the joke presents, there have also been reports of the Queen receiving homemade gifts from family members, too. One Christmas, the Princess of Wales apparently decided to make some chutney, which added a sentimental touch.
“I thought back to what I would give my own grandparents. And I thought, 'I'll make her something.' Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny's recipe of chutney," Kate said in a documentary about the Queen.
Noting that the gesture was a hit, she added: “I noticed the next day that it was on the table. I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions."
