Michael Owen has put an end to the rumours that he will be on Love Island’s ‘Meet the Parents’ episode, as he confirmed this week that he will not be taking part.
The former footballer, 42, whose daughter recently confessed to having a "love-hate relationship" with him, shut down any hopes fans had of seeing him in the villa reuniting with his daughter Gemma Owen, 19, as he responded to the rumours during a sports broadcast.
Every year towards the end of the series, Islanders finally get to see their parents and loved ones after weeks apart — which makes for a particularly emotional moment for contestants.
During the reunion, the housemates get the chance to introduce their partners in the villa to their friends and family in a daunting moment, that many viewers would have been excited to see with intimidating dad Michael involved.
However, it is not to be, the sports star said while speaking on Sky Sports At The Races, as he revealed that Gemma’s mum would do the honours instead if their daughter makes it to the final week.
“My wife will do that duty. I'll represent the horses and she'll represent the daughter,” Michael confirmed.
He added: "I don't know what I'll get from Box To Box. But I know what I'm going to get from my daughter. I've fathered her for 19 years so I'm pretty sure what I'm going to get from her."
This comes after it was reported that the pundit was given the green light to jet to Majorca for the show by his BT Sport employer, following not much football action to cover for the channel.
A source told the The Sun: "The end of July looks to be a golden opportunity for Michael to see Gemma.
"He's notoriously private and anything could change between now and finals week but, all things considered, the odds on him taking part are better than ever."
Michael is said to have “barely watched” daughter Gemma, 19, on Love Island, due to feeling anxious over what he might see and how she might behave.
"Michael has barely watched the show as he has been quite busy over the past few weeks,” a source told the Daily Mail.
Despite not watching, they added that the ex Liverpool star is “massively proud” of his daughter and knows that she is a “sensible” person, so he doesn’t need to worry too much.
